A very delightful place to stay. 8/17/2007

I lived in Kitty Hawk in 1963 and 1964 and went to the high school across the street from the DUKE of DARE..The place is old and odd because of its age but, what the hotel lacked in appearances it made up for in friendliness and concern for their customers.
Mrs. Faye was such a blessing to me and my husband..it was our 39th anniversary. We couldn't find anything less that $129.00 and we would have had to drive all the way back to Williamston for a days inn of $55.00 and (91 miles)!! So $67.00 was OK with us at the DUKE. There is a McDonald's across the street and every kind of food within walking distance and they had a good clean pool. Ice cold AIR CONDITIONING AND QUIET!! WE WILL BE BACK

I wrote this other review a good while back. We had stayed there for many years. This past time, we tried to book, they were very unfriendly, very unhelpful. They would not let our 4 year old daughter stay in the room on a cot, to avoid having to get two rooms.
Their prices are no longer competitive and so we found places cheaper over in Nags Head.
The place is to old to pay the top prices they are charging. I have to say I am disappointed, I am a traditionalist and will miss the family tradition.
Do yourself a favor find somewhere besides the DUKE OF DARE!

A Manteo Classic 11/7/2003

We have always tagged a few extra days on our Ocracoke vacation by staying at the Duke of Dare. The property is old, but well maintained. If you are looking for a fancy "modern" hotel you may be disappointed, but be sure to give it a chance. The rooms are HUGE, and always very clean. I always enjoy our stay, and the staff is very kind and helpful.
Their prices are reasonable as well, and there is lots to see in do in Manteo. Give the Duke of Dare a try, you will enjoy your time and feel right at home!
