Old Outer Banks Recipes

The Carolinian Hotel was located between mile post 10 and 11. Some natives may say that it is wrong to use bacon in Clam Chowder and only salt pork should be used.

The Croatan Hotel was located between mile post 7 and 8.

The Reef Restaurant was located across from the Oasis Restaurant (later becomes The Dock Restaurant, then back to Fisherman's Oasis Restaurant before burning down in 2005, and rebuilt as Oasis Suites) just after the little bridge (Melvin R. Daniels bridge) and before the Washington Baum bridge heading toward Manteo. The Reef later became Spencer's Seafood Safari which had formally been located in Manns Harbor until it burned down in the 60s. I believe that Spencer's later became the Ship's Wheel which is now at the 9.5 mile post on the beach road in KDH.

Seafare was located in Nags Head between the 13 and 14 mile post. They also made the best she crab soup IMHO.

The Oasis Restaurant was famous for their lace cornbread and barefoot waitresses.

hoi Roanokeis- the Croatan Inn pic is one of the better I have ever seen. WAH! Those were the days my friend... And i can just hear Mike Hayman of Seafare intoning "That's right."

They sure were!!! I use to work for Mike at Seafare Jr. Miss him and his mom Phoebe Hayman. His sister Gloria lived nearby and she use to make all the desserts at Kelly's. Phoebe's sister Hattie would come in occasionally and eat. She lived in Manteo. Another sister, Natalie, lives in Manteo now and is in her late 80s or early 90s. Mike's son Todd lives here and will still make the rum rolls on occasion. When I worked at Lone Cedar Todd was working there too. I don't know were Shaun landed. Use to see wife #2, Libby once in a while in Manteo. The last time I saw Mike, he came into Sam and Omie's for lunch and I waited on him and a friend. He was telling me about a law suit that was coming up against his former business partner Mayo Smith. Mayo once owned and operated C&B groceries. Sadly the next day Michael was dead from a sudden heart attack. Story about Mike Hayman follows: Click to follow link...

Roanokeis- did you have the pleasure of working w/ Ed the Creamer at Seafare? "Talk story" indeed...lol.

Ed the creamer? Not that I know of, but it sounds like he would be someone I would remember. Why the name?

Wow, the Carolinian Hotel. We stayed there the very first time we came to the Outer Banks. It was probably around 1972. Thanks for the memories.:fish:

Thanks for posting these. I love it!:smile9:

Rum rolls sound good (well they all do) but what are compressed yeast cakes?? Love the pictures and recipes.

The rum rolls were heaven! So was their bread pudding. Miss Jesse (Berry) made the bread pudding. Wish I had that recipe. Mike was on local cable channel 12 for several years making his famous she-crab soup. I had seen it made so many times, I just did not pay attention any more. Why did I not write that down!? Here is a link to yeast cakes....Click to follow link...

We had Ed Lewis from Seafare working with us at ____Restaurant & he gave us some tips on the bread pudding & chowder. Not She Crab soup though. I must say that the bread pudding was really a meal in itself, folks went nuts over it. The chowder takes a patient hand in the heat dept. & precise measurement of the cooking sherry.

Darolina Restaurant

Here is an ad out of Surfside dated 1978. I have the recipe for their famous crabmeat and avocado dish but I cannot put my hands on it right now. I'll post when I find it. I also have a postcard that I will post later.

Dareolina's "Baked Bluefish." Wonder what Steve Bailey at Risky Biz would have to say about THAT? lol, keep em coming & THANK YOU!

When I worked the food counter at Buck's Seafood, I would stuff blue fish with bread crumbs, tomatoes and other things I cannot remember and bake it. It was popular back then, but not so much now it seems. Darrell's in Manteo has boiled Drum on special Mondays.

Found it! Darolina's famous crab stuffed avocado recipe that I got from a native. Trick is to hardly touch the crabmeat - use hands to lightly toss crabmeat so lumps do not fall apart. 1/2 bottle of Durkees Famous Dressing mix in the following 1Tbs. lemon juice 1 Teasp. Worcestershire sauce 1/2 Teasp. Coleman's mustard Pour mixture only to moisten the crabmeat (1 pound jumbo lump) to taste. You may have leftover. Stuff avocados and serve immediately.

Awww, man! I loved the Oasis lace cornbread! My Grandmama lived on the mainland and we'd come over to the Oasis just to have that whole experience--waterfront dining, barefoot waitresses...(I'm talking late 60's/early 70's era). It impressed me so much that I always wanted to be a Nags Head waitress (back then nobody much called here the "Outer Banks") and I did have a great gig as an RV's girl for 9 seasons.

Also, this is not so old, but Don Gato's had some delicious stuffed avocados every now and then. I miss them but Lucky 12 is very good--Mark B. the owner is a super guy, and the bartenders are very sweet and polite.

...last comment (I promise) My Mom & Dad never wanted to take us to the Seafare as I recall because we'd have to dress up. And yes, thank you everyone for all the cool old restaurant recipes!

You are correct about THAT!

Don Gatos was excellent. Was so dissapointed to hear they'd closed. My old friends keep telling me i know the Lucky 12 crew but i'm rotten w/ names & have not stopped up that way to dine in a long time. :smiley16:

We started going down to the Outer Banks in the mid-70s - we stayed at the old Cabana East Motel. The Seafare was one of our favorite restaurants because of the rum rolls and the She Crab Soup.

A Restaurant By George was the dress-up place though - :roflmao: By dress-up, I mean sandals instead of flip-flops and a golf shirt instead of a t-shirt.

Thanks for the memories!!

Yep, i'd actually throw on some form of attire over my bathing suit when we'd go to the lounge. Dining was total dress-up. I mean come on, PITH HELMETS...you gotta respect that & the harem pants! :roflmao:

Not too mention the fanciest bathroom fixtures on the Outer Banks - :roflmao:
