This is an example of the main reason we keep going back to HI - we won't be able to in the near future of my lifetime. Fell completely in love with the place in the early 90's and now so sad to see it getting washed away. The Atlantic definitely wants to roll over this island.

Including the one in Rodanthe,
"County property records show that nine of the 16 homes were purchased within the past four years, primarily by off-island investors or second-home owners. Their collective purchase price exceeds $5.3 million, averaging roughly $595,000 each.

Nearly all are listed as vacation rentals, reflecting a wider trend: most oceanfront homes on this stretch of Buxton’s beach are not year-round residences but short-term rental investments."

If the owner takes it down before it falls, "...the cost of privately contracted demo work — often between $25,000 and $40,000 or more — is borne entirely by the owner."

I'm not sure that is a new trend (being rentals now)....HI folks have known for a long time that THE place to live (and mitigate the consequences of living on the water) is mid island (neither OF nor SF). Spending winter in this part of the world is not for the faint of heart...doing it OF is next level "shining"....

What did happen is a crazy level of covid buying, especially after last re nourishment project.

Last time sand was pumped onto Buxton's beach was July 2022 at a cost of $18M. All gone and then some, in just 3 years.

My friends used to own not far from Durant Station condos, and one house near them changed hands twice in roughly three years post Covid.

I was lucky to spend time on Hatteras during every month but I never was on it during any snow, I am glad for that.
