Question about competition fishing

Saw an article titled Southern Grace's 653.7-pound marlin disqualified at Big Rock tournament. Disqualified because of Mutilation of a marlin. Why does that matter? Do they mean the marlin was hurt while in the ocean before caught or the crew did something?

RE: Question about competition fishing

"citing visible bite marks that constituted disqualifying mutilation.

According to Rule 24, “Mutilation to the fish, prior to landing or boating the catch, caused by sharks, other fish, mammals, or propellers that remove or penetrate the flesh” results in disqualification. The rule further clarifies that “injuries caused by leader or line, scratches, old healed scars or regeneration deformities are not considered to be disqualifying injuries.”"

"Myers said the fish died mid-fight after a series of hard runs, forcing the crew to winch it from the bottom.

“She came up, hit our left teaser hard. We knew what we had,” Myers said. “We dumped the spool on a 130. Three hours into the fight, she went down and never came back up. She died. That put us into a situation of having to winch her up. That’s what took so long.”

The prolonged fight took a toll on both the crew and the anglers. Jacob Tingen, who spent three and a half hours in the chair before passing it off to Taylor Britt for another two and a half hours, said the experience was overwhelming.

“The disqualification echoes a similar controversy from the 2023 tournament, when the boat Sensation weighed a 619.4-pound marlin only to have it ruled ineligible due to visible bite marks. That decision also referenced mutilation rules under International Game Fish Association (IGFA) standards."

RE: Question about competition fishing

Wow so you can work all that time to get a fish onboard and if a pesky shark jumps up and takes a bite …disqualified …so they consider the fish weaken or too bad dead. What happens to a dead marlin that size?

RE: Question about competition fishing

At 4:30 yesterday the emcee of the tournament relayed that the fish had spooled them FOUR times and they thought it had expired, so they were just cranking it in.

The marlin are used for "research" - at least some of it. NC State and Duke both have marine research labs in Morehead/Beaufort and tissue samples are also shipped around the country.

When it comes to mutilation The Big Rock tournament follows IGFA rules, explained in the video linked. Basically anything that happens to the fish that hinders it's ability to fight DQs the fish.

RE: Question about competition fishing

Right now first place at Big Rock just weighted in a Blue Marlin at 517.4 lbs with more boats coming in.

RE: Question about competition fishing

It's a done deal as far as the Marlin fishing. Congrats to the crew on Big Trouble.

Meat fish scales open until 7 PM.

RE: Question about competition fishing

Big fish..2.5 million purse.

RE: Question about competition fishing

Fishing is so high tech it’s crazy. Look up Omni Sonar. Many of those boats will be running it. And for inshore fishing, Live Scope.

RE: Question about competition fishing

Congrats to them!!! How thrilling for a job well done.

I always wondered about the "mutilation" as well....like who's to say some shark or whatever attacked it while pulling it in. Makes sense now. Thanks for the update on this, guys.

Back in EST!

RE: Question about competition fishing

I have worked for the Big Rock tournament for many years as their representative in Hatteras during tournament week. They take things very seriously, that is a lot of money on the line(all pun intended lol). What a heartbreak for the crew!

RE: Question about competition fishing

Very Interesting. To put in more simpler terms, it's a sportfishing tournament which "Pits" an angler against the fish. If the fish is handicapped and can't fight such as being bitten by a shark it conceivably favors the Angler.

RE: Question about competition fishing

And it's not just the billfish. If the tax man takes a chunk of your tuna, wahoo, or dolphin it is ineligible.

RE: Question about competition fishing

Winner of the White Marlin Open last year was later disqualified.

These tournaments are big money, and the rules are strictly enforced.

RE: Question about competition fishing

Yep, it's in the Big Rock tournament's rules (and most others I assumed) that you agree to take a polygraph if asked. If you are asked and refuse you're DQ'd.

Our old neighbor and his brother were the victims of the famous/infamous Big Rock disqualification because the mate did not have a fishing licence in 2010

Is that the one where a woman was aboard with the group and she didn't have a fishing license which totally disqualified them? I remember something vaguely about that fiasco.

Holy moly! It cost them over $900k. From the article...

"One of the three owners of the Citation says Wann thought the boat had a blanket license that covers the entire crew."

I'm thinking all of the private boats are now paying for the 10-day boat license just for good measure after that, if the rules allow it and don't specifically require each individual to have their own. It's only $150 currently.

Oh the boat crew knew.
Maybe of they had gone to the Captain's meeting the evening before the event they would of been reminded during the rules review but instead they went to the Breakwater and drank.
Then when they caught the fish the mate named Wann got close to shore on the boat and used his phone to go online and buy the licence before they docked.
The two brothers ended up suing the boat captain and his insurance company because they lost a massive amount of endorsements.

RE: Question about competition fishing

In NC "for hire" boats can get a blanket license that covers everyone on board. For a "six-pack" charter boat it is $250/year.

I'm pretty sure there isn't a 10-day or 3-day license for "for hire" boats. At least I haven't found it.

Private boats cannot get a blanket license for the boat.

IIRC from the mate-didn't-have-a-license debacle that Alexy mentioned, boats fishing the BR are not considered "hired" even if they are otherwise a for hire/charter boat. So, to be safe, everyone on board should have a recreational NCSWFL... even if you're just along for the ride, because heaven forbid you touch a line or a reel.

RE: Question about competition fishing

Also, it's not where you BOAT the fish, it's where you LAND the fish.

NC state waters extend out 3 miles. 3-12 miles is federal waters. After that you're in the Exclusive Economic Zone.

So you boat a fish 30 miles out, but Big Rock Landing is in NC, so you need an NCSWFL.

A for hire boat in NC should already have their license. Otherwise, they aren’t doing business. If this was considered a private boat then there is a block 10-day license that was available at the time of this incident. Click to follow link...

EDIT TO ADD: But, as I said in my earlier post I am not sure if the rules allow the boat license. At any rate, in such a big money tournament like this the boat and crew should have a rules review meeting to make sure all are on the same page. There’s a lot at stake.

RE: Question about competition fishing

Have they ever reeled in a big fish with a shark attached? lol, did you ever see the tikrok I think not usa of a great white coming up and snatching a tuna next to the boat, it was huge!!!
