RE: Cbbt tunnel boring complete

The CBBT has two tunnels. This is only one of them. Are they going to do the other tunnel also? Or am I confused and the other one is done?

RE: Cbbt tunnel boring complete

Currently only one tunnel is in use and it carries both north and south bound traffic. It can get kind of scarry when a tractor trailer goes flying by you in the opposite direction. When the new tunnel opens, it will carry southbound traffic only and the current tunnel will carry northbound traffic. In my many years of traveling using the CBBT, I have seen the remnants of some horrific head on collisions in the parking lots by the toll both areas.
Right now, there are two elevated roadways but only one tunnel.

"tunnel started in February 2023. Three months later, the tunnel boring machine struck an obstruction that was later determined to be a large ship’s anchor that was made in England at the turn of the 20th century."

It's always something.

Ok, I just looked it up. There are two separate tunnels with the CBBT. The one they are expanding now is called the Thimble Shoals channel on the south end . The other one is the Chesapeake navigation tunnel on the north end.

A Google search comes up with this: "The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT) has two one-mile-long underwater tunnels. The tunnels run beneath the Thimble Shoals and Chesapeake navigation channels". Look up a map of the CBBT and you will see 2 separate tunnels.

So my question stands. When would they do the other channel?

“At the northern end, a parallel Chesapeake Channel Tunnel will be added to finish the entire length to become a four-lane highway from shore to shore. This project is marked to begin in 2035, which would possibly be open for traffic in 2040, assuming there are no setbacks or delays.”

RE: Cbbt tunnel boring complete

I don't think the tunnel is boring at all. I think it's very interesting!

RE: Cbbt tunnel boring complete

But will they rebuild the restaurant and open the Sea Gull Pier?

At least the pier will reopen...someday...
BTW that pier had some of the best sheepshead and spanish Mackerel fishing anywhere.

Thanks Buckwheat! Wow, that's a long time away! Probably have to find the funding. All this tunneling is very expensive!

RE: Cbbt tunnel boring complete

Should have built the second tunnel when they added the second span years ago . That traffic situation in the existing tunnel is a disaster waiting to happen !

Tunneling is way more expensive than building a bridge. But when the Thimble Shoals tunnel is done the choke point of the entire CBBT system will be the North Chesapeake tunnel.

RE: Cbbt tunnel boring complete

I’ve been traveling back and forth on the CBBT
since 1968. I can’t remember ever an instance of a bad back up or of seeing an accident.
I’ve always found it to be the highlight of our trip (especially the trip down as it meant we were only 2 hours from our return to paradise.)
I hope I live long enough to see the return of the pier.

RE: Cbbt tunnel boring complete

I’m sure everyone knows why there had to be tunnel instead of all bridge. Right?

RE: Cbbt tunnel boring complete

In time of war with the Navy base tunnels were needed so the channels could not be blocked. The Northbound section routinely backs up on the weekends in the summer to the first tunnel from the toll booth in the mornings, hopefully the opening (3 years from now) alleviates that. But just move it to the next one until that is built

Yep. See Key Bridge collapse/Port of Baltimore for reference.

Same reason for Hampton Roads bridge-tunnel. Navy boats gotta get to Navy base.

Yes. Two of the most strategically important channels in the world.

I didn’t realize this until I read the Wikipedia article, but the CBBT is one of only 14 bridge tunnels in the world. And there are only three in the United States, all three of which are in this Google Earth screenshot.

Oh wow, I've lived in this area my whole life and didn't know this either. I don't always fully appreciate the uniqueness of Hampton Roads. The tunnels, the proximity to some kind of water no matter where you are, the big ships. It's all so normal, to me.

Or get out of the Navy base!

RE: Cbbt tunnel boring complete

I remember the first time I crossed that bridge. We were northbound on our way to the World Fair in NY in 1965. As we approached the peninsula a song I had never heard before came on the radio.

I thought “Wow”
