Right now, there are two elevated roadways but only one tunnel.Ok, I just looked it up. There are two separate tunnels with the CBBT. The one they are expanding now is called the Thimble Shoals channel on the south end . The other one is the Chesapeake navigation tunnel on the north end.A Google search comes up with this: "The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT) has two one-mile-long underwater tunnels. The tunnels run beneath the Thimble Shoals and Chesapeake navigation channels". Look up a map of the CBBT and you will see 2 separate tunnels. So my question stands. When would they do the other channel?
But will they rebuild the restaurant and open the Sea Gull Pier?
“At the northern end, a parallel Chesapeake Channel Tunnel will be added to finish the entire length to become a four-lane highway from shore to shore. This project is marked to begin in 2035, which would possibly be open for traffic in 2040, assuming there are no setbacks or delays.”Wikipedia
Should have built the second tunnel when they added the second span years ago . That traffic situation in the existing tunnel is a disaster waiting to happen !
In time of war with the Navy base, tunnels were needed so the channels could not be blocked.
In time of war with the Navy base, tunnels were needed so the channels could not be blocked. Yep. See Key Bridge collapse/Port of Baltimore for reference.Same reason for Hampton Roads bridge-tunnel. Navy boats gotta get to Navy base.
Bingo!
Bingo! I didn’t realize this until I read the Wikipedia article, but the CBBT is one of only 14 bridge tunnels in the world. And there are only three in the United States, all three of which are in this Google Earth screenshot.“List of bridge tunnels” Wikipedia
