I would agree that the girls, especially mares, can be mean. A 1,000lb animal in a bad mood is dangerous. But I lost a good friend last February to a gelding in a bad mood. She had a lifetime of barn and riding experience, but that day, her knowledge didn't matter. She suffered horrible pain in a cold field for 45 minutes before she finally passed. No more riding for me.
That is terrible and I'm sorry. They are huge animals and you just never know. My daughter was thrown by our gelding a couple of times....a broken arm was the worst thankfully. But, he just always had a better disposition than the mares at our place.
