Thanksgiving in Nags Head

Thanksgiving in Nags Head

16 days left until we leave for a week in Nags Head to celebrate Thanksgiving with family. We already have a pile started for packing but time to get serious. This will be our second visit this year (first in July). We are 100% beach people in the summer so visiting at a different time of year gives us the chance to check out some other things. Any suggestions?

Have fun.
My wife and I are planning to be in Ocracoke on Thanksgiving and probably at the Ocracoke Oyster Company. We just got home yesterday to get some things done today. Oh, and start in on the fallen leaves.

Many things are still open that time of year. I can't speak for touristy stuff as that's not my jam. Fish Heads will be closed. Manteo may be a cool spot to walk around as some folks may have holiday decorations out at that time. The 12 Bars of Christmas starts up on the 29th in case you want to go out for some beverages or you're sick of Thanksgiving grub. Click to follow link... I've done "Jingle 12" (Lucky 12) a few times and it's always a fun time. Of course there's always the beach.

Oh, there's also Whalehead Club in Corolla. I don't know if they do anything different, but if they are open and ornaments are your thing, they used to make a custom ornament each year from the copper of the original roof. I assume they are still doing this unless they've run out of the copper already. You'll need to look into that one if interested.

RE: Thanksgiving in Nags Head

A trip to the Christmas Shop in Manteo will really get you in the spirit.
And we love the Island Farm

If you like to walk and the weather is nice , the Freedom Trail on Roanoke Island is nice.

RE: Thanksgiving in Nags Head

Have a wonderful trip. The Elizabethan Gardens Winter Lights is a wonderful family activity.

Beach fire. Hot dogs, smores, etc. A permit is about $10 and you can pick up wood at most grocery and hardware stores.

RE: Thanksgiving in Nags Head

If you happen to be in Manteo, and the house over in Mann's Harbor has his Christmas lights, it's worth the drive over.

You could take advantage of the lighter crowds to explore areas you might not visit peak season, like driving Rt 12 South. There are several shipwrecks to be found and the Graveyard of the Atlantic museum in Hatteras, etc. Fish Heads will have its last weekend which is always lively (last day is Nov 30). There should be a couple of holiday markets in the area. Nags Head Woods and the Roanoke Island historical spots make for some leisurely autumnal walks. Jockey's Ridge will host Kites at Night on Nov 30. Beware, you might have so much fun you'll plan to come back next Thanksgiving. Just be prepared for all kinds of weather (warm, sunny, tshirts on beach to Nor'easter conditions) possibly all in one week.

Very FUN family activity at Jockey’s Ridge! Pack snacks and blankets!

We have done Thanksgiving week in the Outer Banks for probably 10 years on and off over the last 20.

We have a beachfront home in Nags Head this year and it will be our first since 2020.

Thanksgiving week basically everything is open still. Obviously on Thanksgiving day it is different.

Weather can be quite lovely some years. In fact I remember one year we had a high of 82

I rented an ocean front home in Hatteras Village for Thanksgiving week in 2006. A winter Nor'easter blew in on Monday with winds gusting to 90 MPH+. The master suite was on the top floor and the house was shaking so much the shower doors in the bathroom were banging back and forth in the tracks. There were white caps in the toilet. No one could get on the Island until late Thursday and the power was out for most of that time. But turkeys were cooking on Weber grilles and some guests still arrived for a late dinner. There were plenty of dune breaches, and flooded roads in all of the likely spots. I didn't go north of Buxton until Sunday. Burrus Red and White stayed open and saved the day for many! Quite the experience, but fun none the less.

This is the day forecast for nags head that takes you all the way up to the 27th.

That was a horrible storm. I got water under my house and lots of mud in Kitty Hawk. Another one hit 1 year to the day in 2007 at Thanksgiving.

We were there for that storm!! It was our second year in our beach box and not having been through a big storm yet, I seriously wondered if we should have evacuated. In SNH, we had overwash down our driveway and the house shook all night. The Comfort Inn lost its pool (yes, they used to have a pool). The condos next door to the hotel had a pool that cracked in half. We cooked our Thanksgiving meal the next day on two Webers also. The guys decided to try to drive up the road to get ice, but police had the beach road at Whalebone blocked as the overwash was all over, creeping toward the 7-11. This was long before beach nourishment. The ocean was full of dune access stairs and debris. We saw a guy walking his dog on the beach which was eroded and very narrow. The water got sucked out and came back in quicklyhe and the dog just barely made it to some dune stairs. What a mess!! The next day we ventured out and locals said it was the worst storm without a name that they could remember.

RE: Thanksgiving in Nags Head

Thanks for the feedback! This will be our second Thanksgiving in Nags Head so we're familiar with the range of weather possibilities, that most places are open etc. We got rained out for WinterLights two years ago so we'll try again this year. How long should we plan for that to take? Trying to decide if we want to eat dinner before or after. If you see people sitting outside at Fishheads, that will probably be us. Coming from NY, anything above 30 this time of year feels a bit like a heat wave. Laughing smiley

We just called it the Thanksgiving day storm. There was another 1 year to the day the next year, but it was not as bad as the 2006 storm the year before. This was 11 years before nourishment in KDH. Since nourishment in 2017 there has been no overwash at all in this area. In the picture I took you can see the Dominion Electric truck which got stuck there in that low spot.

RE: Thanksgiving in Nags Head

We've spent many a thanksgiving on HI as we could grab a four day weekend before we retired. Drive down on Wednesday night with the kids listening to a cassette of Harry Potter in the car for the kids and crashing in Avon around midnight. We spent a lot of time on the beach shelling, walking on the pier, hiking around Buxton Woods and I would fix a dinner at 6 pm with candles watching the water outside.

That was when the cinema was open in Avon and we would always catch a movie. A lot of fishing and hanging with the kids and eating and laughing while we still had our kids before becoming empty nesters. The good ol days!

RE: Thanksgiving in Nags Head

We’ve spent a number of Thanksgivings on the Banks. There was always something special about it - especially years ago when it was pretty much empty this time of year.

Meg, hope you have good weather this trip. When we visit Winter Lights it's with little ones who love to play in the play areas, chat with Santa and have a hot chocolate so it takes us more than two hours. We dine before lining up at the entrance and the kiddos are asleep on the ride home. Have fun and please post pics.

Fish Heads is open through Nov 30, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Hit it up because they usually discount everything to clean out the inventory

RE: Thanksgiving in Nags Head

Turned out to be a really nice week.

Got a little cold on Saturday, but most probably left that day. Thanksgiving which they touted as Rainy was not.
