Palmetto Bugs on the sound side?

Hey everyone.
I just got back from a week in Duck where my brother and his wife rented a nice home on the sound. The first night I was the last one up and while I was sitting there reading I thought I saw a cricket. but it didn't hop it crawled quickly. I checked and a 2" Palmetto bug scurried out and into the pantry. I tried to get him but made a note for the next morning. Upon checking next am we found and killed 3 big ones. We then sprayed Raid (generously supplied by the homeowner - maybe a hint) and killed them. By the end of the night we found 4 more dead. We had called the owner who called in the pest guys and they again sprayed inside and out.
Throughout the week we found/killed about 15-20 more.
I have been staying in the Outer Banks off and on for about 28 years. 90% of the time we were on the ocean side and I have never seen these guys before. I have seen ants yes but not these large critters.
Are they normal?

We have them from time to time on the sound in Frisco. Hubby has some good stuff that he sprays under the house. We'll see maybe one in a week...sometimes dead from where he has sprayed. We never keep yucky garbage in our kitchen can, and always take out quickly. I just think it's something around this area. When we rented out the house before and had regular pest services, the same thing happened but worse. Just one of those things.

Interesting. I did note that the house was not well cleaned. It had cobwebs everywhere (on chandeliers etc) and in corners there were spiders etc. I just checked the site again and noticed that all reviews were glowing but no reviews later than October 2023. I wonder if they house sat empty for a while.

It's normal particularly when we've had rain like we've had lately. If homes stay with the every 90 day spray schedule in the summer you're more likely to see them live. Homes spraying every 6 or 8 weeks you'll usually see them dead. They come in to shelter from storms in wet weather and in very dry weather they come in for the water from the condensation line for the AC. Raid is a fast kill product that won't address an issue other than killing the immediate bug (and there are better, safer things you can use for that), and insurance prohibits leaving things like that, so it was likely left behind by a renter unless the homeowner directed you to it.

When I lived in FL they were the bane of my existence, even with monthly indoor and outdoor treatments, so I keep to the 8 week schedule half the year and cut back in the cold season when they're less prevalent.

As KDHB mentioned it's been so wet they're just looking for a place to hang...but, I will say, the bug guys are working hard. One back everyday to a guest cottage near us.

Yesterday, I found one walking around in our "basement" ...very odd for us as usually, especially if we've been away, we find them dead as the "spray" has done it's thing.

And, yeah, SWFL...they are everywhere. If you have an older home that is not "sealed" like newer ones, you'll never get rid of them. My grand mom would yell out "cucaracha, cucaracha!" at the top of her 4'11" lungs anytime she spotted one in the kitchen

I see one in my house every now and then and after all the rain we have had draws them inside.

I use Pestie and it seems to work well.

A late spring spreading of about 5 lbs of diatomaceous earth around the perimeter and under a beach house usually keeps the roaches and ants at bay for about 6 months but when it rains they look for places up off the ground ( your house)

I use the Large Bug bait traps, 8 or more at a time. Works better than the pros. When I see a live bug I change them out. Otherwise I only see dead ones.

When I had pro service I never got rid at all. I swore they were feeding them.

For the record, they are not from keeping a dirty house. They are "water bugs" and we live on the water.

If my wife saw spiders in the corners she would be sleeping in the car. She does not like spiders. USA Flag
