Airplane with a roacket at First Flight

Listening to the scanner and there is a plane at first flight that has had a rocket launched from it into the woods around the monument. Interesting. 5:30pm

RE: Airplane with a roacket at First Flight

people on Facebook saying a plane crashed? but if you are hearing something different on scanner you probably have more accurate info.

RE: Airplane with a roacket at First Flight

Listening to the scanner I am thinking it is a military jet, it had a rocket eject and caught the woods on fire nearby. They closed the runway - I assume there is a plane or junk on it the NTSB wants to see. The state police were asked to quarantine the area for the NTSB to arrive. A crash or accident for sure. The medivac was canceled - but no call for the Chaplin.

RE: Airplane with a roacket at First Flight

Facebook picture. I am thinking this is a runway excursion into trees. They did cancel Medivac - maybe no one to Medivac???????

National Park Service hit the news feed that a plane crashed into the woods near Wright Brothers Memorial Saturday at 5pm. Witness said plane came in too low for landing. Fatalities. No names released. Condolences to the families for their loss.

It looks like it was a Cirrus (light plane) N1281F. These Cirrus planes have a emergency parachute that can be used to lower the plane down in an emergency. But it has to be used with enough altitude for it to work. If the pilot was too low, the chute deploying might have looked like a "Flare". So sad. First Flight airstrip has been a very safe place, a good safety record.

That makes sense. The firemen (non pilots) kept saying a rocket was fired. It could have been the ballistic parachute the Cirrus has, as you said. I wondered why they needed so much water and why no military aircraft showed up here. The witness said it came in to low to land I am wondering what that means? FFA has some nasty crosswinds for sure!!!

You always have to take witness accounts with a grain of salt. I read that another witness said they were too high to land. Why would you expect military aircraft to be there?

Now, crosswinds and gusty landing conditions are a constant at First Flight. Those tall trees on each side of the runway usually make for challenging landings.

RE: Airplane with a roacket at First Flight

The firemen were saying that a rocket was fired off and started a fire. What plane has a rocket other than military? It is obvious now that is was a Cirrus - here is the flight log showing that plane doing a good bit of flying in the last week. It had left Manteo to go to First Flight when it crashed.

By the way for the non pilots, the flight duration's around here are off a lot because you are not seen on radar until you get up over a thousand feet, so they can't track you if you are too low.

RE: Airplane with a roacket at First Flight

This shows altitude vs speed. The plane came down low and was doing 100 mph which is pretty fast.

There were 5 fatalities, including one minor.

Interesting - that Cirrus is a 4 seater and they just left Manteo - I wonder if they fueled up there. Overweight maybe? It looks like it was just made in 3-2024.

RE: Airplane with a roacket at First Flight

I did some gum shoe work and this seems like the plane owner. A google search found this and he seems to go to a lot of car races.

I've been thinking that myself, that they were close to gross weight. The data I found shows it manufactured in 2023. Sad story.

EDIT: Manufactured in 2023, airworthiness certificate issued in March 2024.

That is horrific news. Prayers for them and their families. The "rocket" sounds like it was the automatic deployment of the airplanes safety chute. ( Link attached)

I was curious to know what the minimum altitude for deployment was and I found this.

It can lift 1400 lbs and with 5 people and fuel and luggage I came to about 100 lbs of max load. I wonder if when he was abeam the landing spot on the runway you throttle back to slowly land, but his tail was heavy and dropped and he stalled.

That article says it has seats for 4 and a pilot and that is not correct. Two seats in front and two behind.

RE: Airplane with a roacket at First Flight

The plane did have the ballistic parachute option. I found a picture of the inside of the plane that crashed and you can see the red handle to pull in the plane's ceiling.

RE: Airplane with a roacket at First Flight

It had a really nice panel too.

What a terrible accident. One of my buddies owns a 2012 sr22. I've been up in it a dozen times or so. What a great and safe aircraft. Funny thing about the chute system. You really do pay for the safety system. Once when you purchase the plane then every 10 years the chute system must be replaced. In 2022 he payed almost 30K for a new system. While he was at it he changed / updated some of the Garmin avionics for another 40K. It will be interesting to find out how they think the plane went down

RE: Airplane with a roacket at First Flight

They have released the names of the adults. But not the 6 yo child yet. Tim was right on the name attached to the LLC. Matt Fassnacht. You can easily Google the other names.

As a retired pilot I have some ideas what might have happened but I have learned it's not good to speculate. Most of the time you're wrong.
