Would be interested in your view...The Sea Chef seemed somewhat odd in that it seems to be primarily a "kites" kinda retail space - there is a small (for the size of the whole place) dining area (you order at counter and then seat yourself). Food was "reasonable" ....cocktails not so much...but a growing trend down here $13/15 well drinks offsetting a dish they'd like to sell for $25 but sell for $20

RE: New Oregon Inlet center

Do they have a place there where my grandsons can watch the boats unload their catch of the day?

RE: New Oregon Inlet center

I ate at the Sea Chef before the season kicked in. Food was great, but you nailed the drinks. $8 for a draft beer, but that has become standard here. Over $100 for 2 people, not counting tip.

I would still recommend it compared to others on HI, but bring your wallet. I think most of you are used to that by now.

Yes, same as before: just park and walk along the dock as the boats pull in daily in the 3:30 to 4 PM timeframe. The new fishing center hasn't affected that at all.

RE: New Oregon Inlet center

Had no idea a eatery was going in the unit , so what happens to the old building ? It seemed to be a classic OBX type of business that I guess is now slowly going away !

RE: New Oregon Inlet center

Someone told me it’s going to be demolished.
I hope that’s not true.

RE: New Oregon Inlet center

We see it all of the time driving north on 12. We're just not sure, but haven't stopped to really look at it closely. It is very pretty however. It's cool that they have a dining room there. As far as the drink prices, they are high, but it's like that everywhere now. I'm def not going to spend $8.00 on a draft beer. I usually get water or tea at dinner anyway, so no probs there. I'd like like to try dinner there though for the view!

That's a busy area, and with the kinds of boats that pull in, those people can afford it. Out of my league.

Strikes me as odd that the dont serve breakfast......at a marina

Right? What a miss. I think I'll die before I see a quick in/out breakfast sandwich spot anywhere near Whalebone.

Not just on OBX, it's everywhere, unfortunately. Everywhere I've been throughout NC and VA, at least. In the mid 2000s my coworkers and I had a few spots around Raleigh that had $3.00 pint nights. Then it went to $3.50. And these were the specials nights, usually they were $4-5. I don't think I've paid less than $6-8 for a pint in 10 years or more. The one that really rubs me is Food Dudes Kitchen because they have bottles so you're receiving a smaller portion and they hit you for $7, but the food there is excellent so I suck it up.

RE: New Oregon Inlet center

Was there about two weeks ago and I was impressed. I particularly liked the covered porch area with chairs that overlooks the marina.

As a long time local Resident and Retired Charter Boat Captain I really believe the Focus is on Tourist. OIFC is a very big tourist attraction and everything was designed for that faction. You have to remember the Fishing Center is no longer leased to, and run by the Local Captains Consortium. The NPS wanted to get more money and it found some big business to Lease and Run it. One of the lease clauses was to make major improvements that the NPS could not or would not do. In comes a money man! Granted it has one of, if not the most Professional Charter Boat Fleets on the East Coast, but the Outer Banks is Tourism focused. Yes, many of the Charter Parties are Tourist but they are a given. How does a business make money? Charge high prices. Early Breakfast, ha, ha! No place has early Breakfast. In many other ports you have 24 Hour Diners or Breakfast joints that open at 4 AM.

RE: New Oregon Inlet center

Stopped in just out of curiosity.
Definitely another tourist trap.

RE: New Oregon Inlet center

I was thinking about all the entitled tourist types there eating breakfast as the charter boats go out without them lol. First time charters being the worse culprits. I bet a retired charter boat captain has a lot of stories about crazy customers. I was always on time and had every thing ready to fish!!!

There's still some $3.50 pints nights around. Try Brixx Pizza in Brier Creek on a Monday and break that 10 year streak!

A wee bit far from the Quay, but good to know they still exist! Bass Lake Draft House and Hibernian on Kildaire were my two primary watering holes. The Hib has been closed there for a long time now. RIP.

RE: New Oregon Inlet center

Breakfast served at a marina has to be a well oiled machine to pull it off with a surge of customers at 5am. A full staff there bright and early, kegs of coffee made, cases of eggs scrambled... that ain't happening on the OBX that has a thin labor force. Bring extra sandwiches or fried chicken for breakfast, or just coffee and cigars. It's a fishing trip, not a church pancake breakfast. I have seen plenty of barely digested food wasted over the rail at 6:15 am. At least try to keep it down until we start trolling, then you can chum. Big grin

RE: New Oregon Inlet center

Well I was brought in Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn mating on Partyboats. The Dinners were open around 4 and you couldn't even get in the door both for Breakfast and Sandwiches for the day. Montauk, the bars closed at 4 AM and the Fisherman walked directly to the boats or to the few dinner that were open. Bacon/Egg on a hard roll. How about Egg Potato and Pepper Hero for that days lunch with either Hoffman Root Beer or Orange Soda. Those were the days, lots of fun with real fisherman.

RE: New Oregon Inlet center

Pickle, your mention of a hero sandwich reminded me of a headboat trip for sea bass. We had a very good day and coolers were pretty full so we got into our lunch and maybe a few or five fermented grain beverages. One of the boys put a piece of pepperoni on a hook, drops it down and sure enough, he pulls up a fish. That sandwich went on down the rail so everyone could put something from it on their hook and give it a try. Lots of laughter from all around the boat and even the captain put a ball of his peanut butter sandwich on and caught one from the top deck. Fun times.

RE: New Oregon Inlet center

Found on the internet, taken a week or so back. $5 and $6 cans.

That sounds divine. I'd settle for something like Biscuits and Porn. Will it be enough to accommodate everyone going fishing that day before the boat leaves? No, but they can crank out biscuits with the best of them and could feed a lot. And it beats the hell out of carrying a sandwich or God forbid old chicken. Two breakfast biscuits is all of the food intake I need until dinner and it just sets the day right when fishing. Easy to eat, no frills, no mess, and delicious. There are enough people launching personal craft after the charter guys leave and folks fishing ramp 4, Bonner Bridge, or headed south I think someone could have made a good run at it if they had wanted to.

Yikes! $8 Pernicious sounds about par for the course. I love that beer.

You are the minority.
We stopped doing charters with people we did not know.
Between showing up late ( 40 mins) and showing up drunk/ getting obnoxiously drunk/smoking weed on the trip getting seasick and general lack of courtesy and fishing experience its a roll of the dice anymore.
With the being 40 mins late I was actually more upset at the charter captain waiting for them rather than setting off in 2019

As far as breakfast on the docks yes that would be good but the labor force on the island would never support it. If you had anyone who would show up and work those hours they would be run into the ground quickly or you yourself would be burnt up supporting it.
