45th wedding anniversary trip report

Arrived home yesterday from our much anticipated 45th wedding anniversary trip to the Banks. We had a fantastic week - in no small part due to the terrific weather we enjoyed all week long. I’ve never done a trip report before, but here goes……

We stayed in a sweet little cottage in SNH mp 20.5 (almost the end of Old Oregon Inlet Rd) that backed up to the wildlife preserve. Forty-five years ago we honeymooned in SNH in an oceanfront house that’s still a rental property. It was called the Pirates Den up until a recent name change.
We did a lot of eating out. Yay! We hit all our favorite places.
Fish Heads for dinner 2x’s
Sam and Omies for breakfast
Blue Water Grill for dinner (shrimp and grits were great!)
Wanchese Marina and Grill for lunch
Darrell’s for breakfast (always have to go there for old times sake)
The Dunes for breakfast 2x’s
Mulligans for lunch
Fresh Market for paninis

We had great beach days!
Hubby caught a shark lol!

We drove to Hatteras to visit the Graveyard of the Atlantic museum. It was closed. But we visited the little weather station museum in Hatteras and also the Lost Colony museum in Buxton which was great. It was a fun drive down and was our first ride on the new jug-handle

What really was fun was having our longtime friends come and join us for a couple of days. They vacationed with us several times years ago when my parents had the house in NH but it had been 30 years since they had been to the Banks. They loved it as much as they did way back then. We took them to Manteo and then we roamed around Fort Raleigh. We visited the Island Farm and loved it! Bought a bunch of stuff there including a beautiful quilt and some things made by the blacksmith. Perfect for our old colonial farmhouse here in Jersey. We also took them to Bodie Island Lighthouse.
Our son and DIL stayed overnight Wednesday on their way to a wedding on Ocracoke. We all went to Fish Heads and had a blast.

Saturday hubs and I went to the farm market set up over in Manteo. Picked up a few things there including the best cookies I’ve ever had from Chris at the Sweater Box Confections booth! Look for SBC cookies around different places. The oatmeal cookies were out of this world! Then we walked around Festival Park and the little boardwalk along the water over there. We also always love to get coffee at Charis.
Stopped at the bookstore and picked up John Railey’s latest release Murder in Manteo. A great read!

All too soon the week was over! Yesterday morning was glorious and the forecast called for a beautiful day.
It was hard to leave the best place on earth in such a gorgeous day,
but we will be back in September with the kids and grands. We will be in the same great house across the beach road from Fish Heads (so no problem to find a parking spot, we can just walk right over) the 3rd year in a row and can’t wait!!

I loved your report on the fun trip. You guys surely had a wonderful time!! What a cute house, too!

Thank you everyone.
We couldn’t have had a more perfect week!
The weather on our honeymoon was great too.
A lot has changed since 1979.
My new husband was so nervous bc the house was so isolated lol. Today you have to look between a lot of houses to see it.
We crossed the WMB at 2 in the morning having driven from NJ after our reception. Driving down the bypass the only lights we saw came from the (still there!) 7eleven at Whalebone Junction. We stopped and got pineapple ice cream and pretzels! Apparently they were open at that hour for fishermen to buy bait.
I’m already counting the days until our next trip.
Hoping maybe we can sneak one in before September.

It was so peaceful and quiet way down the end of Oregon inlet Road. I’d say the majority of houses were empty - which surprised me.

The one thing that’s getting a little hard is the ride back and forth.
I wish there were a good way to avoid the crazy drive through Virginia Beach on Rt 64. It’s a real white knuckle, nail biter for about 10 minutes and I’m getting so I dread it. Route 1 through Delaware going home is getting kind of scary with some insane drivers so we might start staying on Rt 13N to the DM bridge even though it’s stop and go.
Most of the trip down 13 is a breeze.

Sounds like great fun and great weather!

I’d be happy even if it rained everyday but we were thrilled to have so many beautiful days.
When we left Jersey it was cold and rainy all the way into southern Delaware. We hit Maryland and the clouds gave way to sun. And it was sunny days all week (except for Friday evening when the T-storms hit). Our son and DIL were at a wedding on Ocracoke and got slammed during the reception.
. Wednesday it got up to 90 degrees in SNH!

The trip home was sun til we (again in Delaware)drove into a terrible lightening and thunder storm so bad we decided to stop til it passed. Then rain all the way to home. Ugh!

I forgot to mention we had late lunch at the 2nd floor bar at Millers on the sound.
Great food and spectacular view of the sound!
Don’t miss it!
