Fortified Roof

Fortified Roof

The roofing company started our new roof Saturday and have been busy today. I'm very impressed with this entire process!

So difficult with the pitch on a saltbox roof. These guys are great!

Looks good. Two courses of waterproof membrane is a good idea, or maybe that's part of the standard.

Thanks! They are working very hard. The membrane, I believe, is a standard they use, but you are correct as it is a great added feature.

Not standard. That is a specific requirement of the program.

Have had all kinds of inspectors out to take pics...inside the attic as well as other areas. They hail from Grandy and are so professional.

Thanks for the clarification. I had two courses put on my roof and up the eaves as well when it was replaced about 10 years ago. Cheap insurance for the cost of an extra roll or two.

RE: Fortified Roof

..you did say "The Standard" didn't you? Yes, it is part of what is demanded by the program but not standard on the average inland home.

That's good that you have them! Sure does prevent headaches!

I knew what you meant.

What company did you go with?

We went with Daniel's Roofing. They've done about four homes on our street within the past 1.5 years.

RE: Fortified Roof

I have questions about this fortified roofing. My roof is over 20 years old so I know replacement of the roof is fast approaching. From what I read, it seems that you can get a discount on your homeowners insurance. I also read that this is a grant for up to $6000.00. The word grant has me confused, is this a loan? How does that work?
Thank you

It is not a loan…no need to repay but you do need to declare the grant money on your taxes. Here is a website that gives information: Click to follow link...

RE: Fortified Roof

The grant has been increased to 8K now and you pay the roofer 50 percent up front and the remainder when complete. You then go to the next step online and agree that the work has been done (inspectors have already loaded your file with pics of the job...Grandy people which are the administrators for us and probably most in this area) and then you upload info for a W-9 and your 8K is sent within 2 to 6 weeks to reimburse you. The addition of the fortified roof supposedly decreases your wind insurance annually. Of course, Uncle Sam always gets his part, but that's how it works.

You should really give it a try. We applied last December and it took a bit for the grant to be reinstated for 2023. Basically, we are paying 1200 dollars for a fortified roof. (I picked out designer shingles that were a bit more expensive and the roofer had to order them ...but that was okay given the grant reimbursement....I wanted what I wanted since it is a one time shot).

You can absolutely PM us and we can discuss. Hubby started it and we are happy it is getting done. He's pretty savvy with this type of thing and would be happy to walk you through it.

RE: Fortified Roof

We participated in the program a few years ago and the $6000 grant check came within a few weeks after competition. It seems to be a well run program and I would encourage participation.

I am no expert and have not moved toward this yet.

If you are with NCJUA insurance (the beach plan) they offer a subsidy if you get this system and they will pay upto $6k of it. You are at 20 years, if you were to sell a 20 yr old roof is not something a lender will like. So look into a new roof. I am at 14 years so I am looking for the future.

Totally agree. We did it on one last year and was well done by the contractor and grant paid quickly. You will get taxed by NC on the grant money but overall well worth it.

RE: Fortified Roof

Roofers finished at 3:30 today....just in the nick!!! Whew! I felt as if I was shelling in the yard today picking up little pieces of roof debris even though they got the big stuff and cleaned well. I just don't want it flowing in the storm surge to neighbors' yards.

Very happy with the outcome of the roof!! I love the Pacific Wave shingle style I chose. Very New England- ish. Goes well with the white cedar shakes.

Be careful, all!

Wow!
Talk about cutting it close!

Send a picture. Pacific Wave style???????

RE: Fortified Roof

And again....trying to post this pic! It was the best I could find with the color before they were complete.

Edit: Owen's Corning Co. Pacific Wave.

Looks great. It takes a bit of hot sun to get them to seal tight. Fingers crossed!

Perfect choice

RE: Fortified Roof

Thanks everyone for the information and encouragement. I applies Wednesday, and heard back Friday that I was approved. They even give you a list of potential contractors that are qualified to do the work. Living in Massachusetts the bureaucracy is daunting I would never have got this done this quickly and efficiently. Everything was straight forward,
Thank you
