Delbert was 71 and in poor health. He was a bouncer at Atlantis back in the day, 1985-ish but I mostly recall him out at 1st Street break or in da hood around 3rd Street.

That's a pretty cutting edge board for back in the day...

Dude was pretty swole as a young man. Having that kind of muscle mass and the appetite that comes with it is a problem as you get older. I'm kinda dealing with that now. Being athletic and lifting heavy and eating big has momentum and if you don't scale it down and do more cardio and stretch and watch what you eat it can take it's toll when your body slows down. Even so it looks like he lived life to the fullest and by his own code. Not many can say that. Mad respect.

Rick Romano (Surfpainter) wrote a sweet piece about playing football against Delbert up in Vah Beach. I can’t find his post now but will keep looking…

RE: Sad News

My son used to call him "The guy with the truck full of stuff" Because he had a truck that was always piled high with "stuff".

RE: Sad News

Thanks for adding in some great pics, Hoi. I thought you might have known him. This place is fertile ground for sowing and growing some unforgettable characters. He sure was one of them.

I think every beach town has a Delbert. They are the fabric of what makes living by the sea different from living almost anyplace else, though I imagine Ski Resort towns may have similar personalities.

Good for you Sir Delbert, for living YOUR life on YOUR terms.

Until Valhalla

Nicely said. My fb buddy a retired pro surfer has lost many friends in a few months. He mentioned knowing Delbert and people giving the man a ride around the banks. Even though surfers are supposed to be healthy sometimes I wonder if its the hard partying life out of the waves. 71 is older but some are much younger.

There is a beach near me called Whiskey Beach, some call it Herring Point. Here Surfers and Fishermen co-exist. We are each weird in our own ways. Interspersed every day are Wall Street Warriors, DC Lawyers and the Delberts of the world. But we all share a passion for the sea, whether it be riding the waves above or fishing for what lurks below.

I am many times envious of those who have not adhered to mainstream protocol, because at some point in the day I have to pack up and go home for a conference call, or make dinner, but the Delberts don't need a clock to enjoy life.

Well, someday you might walk away and join the Delbert Corps. I did almost 20 years ago after my divorce. Only thing I cared about after that was my kids so I set out to build a place and a life here on the OBX that would facilitate many happy times with them. No more endless travel and corporate culture. No more suit and tie.... I may not have the fanciest house or boat in the world, both my cars are over 20 years old and I gotta fix em myself but I make the very best of and take care of what I have. I grow my beard and and hair till I feel like shaving my head and most of my clothes are 10-20 years old or more...I can walk around all day doing lawn chores in a pirate hat and surf shorts and look the neighbors in the face with a smile because I just don't give a sh!t. ...AND best of all I feel closer to God in my bare feet every day. (; BTW if you ever DO walk away make sure you got plenty of tools, yer gonna need em! Wink smiley
