Never had that happen before…

Much has been said about people not cleaning up after their dogs. What happened today was a first for me.

When we take our dogs for a walk on the beach, they almost always go number two as soon as they get over the walkway and step on the sand. Because of this, we will always wait and bag it up then leave it lay at the bottom of our walkway until we return. That way we don’t have to carry the poop bag on our walk.

Took our dog for a walk today and sure enough, she did her business shortly after hitting the sand. I bagged it and sat it at the bottom of the walkway and off we went. Although cloudy, it was a nice day for a walk. As we were returning, I could see someone by my walkway, but didn’t think much of it. When we got there I was surprised to find no bag! I’m guessing the person that I saw picked it up! If you happen to read this, thanks! Not necessary, but appreciated!

At least they did not set it on fire.

RE: Never had that happen before…

Nice folks.

I think most who bag and leave it behind intend to return and are well intentioned in doing so and don't realize that leaving the bag by the access point compels other dogs coming onto the beach to then urine and fecal mark, or that it makes for a needlessly smelly access point.

RE: Never had that happen before…

I’ve heard locals complain about finding bags of dog poop at access points before, assuming someone just left it, and not thinking about the fact that someone intended on coming back for it, and just didn’t want to walk around with it. Guessing whomever picked yours up thought it was just someone leaving their crap behind. Lol

RE: Never had that happen before…

I have seen my wife return with different colored poop bags before.

We always pick up trash on the beach...did so today...but I stop at poo bags. Especially poo bags that are near accesses as I know that those were left by good dog parents to grab on their way out of the beach. (Cold as methuselah today...but I found 4 whole whelk shells and 4 pieces of sea glass because who in their right mind would have ventured out today!!!)

Picked up hypodermic needles on Cape Point before Christmas. Scary! Just struck me that maybe a child may have touched them. We take 5 gallon buckets and gather litter. One for the trash and one for shells.

RE: Never had that happen before…

I don't know what else is put in our trash can before trash pick up. It irks me when I go to bring the empty can back to the house and find a poop bag has been dropped in after pick up. The bags ain't airtight and stink the can up. I'm not one to leave the can at the street after pick up. Usually I'll bring it back to the house ASAP to avoid presents left by dog walkers. Dog

RE: Never had that happen before…

I carry a small shoulder sling bag when walking the dog. I use it to carry a sealable gallon bag for the poop bags so I bring them along without having to smell or hold them. Also nice for bringing along a dog water bottle, and a pepper spray in case we encounter an off-leash, aggressive dog.

They all do it there, no matter if there is a bag or not. The excitement of getting on the beach is too much. They all want to leave their legacy at the trading posts.

No, they don't. People with basic dog sense walk their dogs before the entrance to the beach and dispose of the solids at the garbage then go for their walk. It's easy to do because there's the sound/movement of the waves and the heavy scent trigger there. It also keep the beach side of the access from smelling like a sewer and picks up after our dog as we're supposed to. And, it just the courteous thing to do.

No they don't. Your way is no better than the others stated. You know what's also courteous? Not insulting someone online that you have a difference of opinion with (and yeah, what you said is an opinion). Basic dog sense...You're assuming there are areas for the dog to go in before the beach access. You're also assuming that a garbage can is at the access. You're also assuming that all dogs follow the same "go before the beach" logic. So many assumptions...

You have clearly never had a dog or not one with a diehard position on pooping on the beach. My old dogs would hold it in with all their might until they got to the beach. My old pit bull, Betsy, would hold it in FOREVER because she knew her walk was going to last as long as it took her to poop. Pooping on the beach isn't a big deal IMO. Pick it up and carry it with. I'm kind of off put by folks leaving bags, to be honest. My neighbor has a habit of leaving it for later and then getting distracted because she's always on the phone and 1/2 the time the bags remain. A discarded bag leaves no hint whatsoever that it will be picked up by its owner. Just take it along for the ride. There are usually accesses you can walk up along the way to find a trash can.

None of those things. I'm acknowledging that owning a dog makes us responsible for the dog's care, and the laws regarding cleaning up after our dogs involve cleaning the mess and either taking it with us to dispose of later, or disposing of it then, but not our temporarily collecting it to remain in that space for others to enjoy so that you don't have to.

Dogs toilet when and where we train them to go. We train them to go where and when they do by either actively training them or negligently so. Whatever you do repeatedly with your dog, trains your dog to do that.

Toileting them before they enter the beach so that you don't have to (or are less likely to have to) carry a bag of poop on your walk or need to leave the beach to use a trash can is similar to having children use the bathroom before a walk or a car trip. Neither kids nor dogs would think to do that, but that's why they have adults to help them navigate a world with poop pick up and littering laws.

RE: Never had that happen before…

All 3 of my Goldens would poop at the house, but they still manage to squeeze one out on the beach. I would never walk them without having additional bags with me!

I've raised a bunch of dogs. Some of them were even well trained (some not). I have never owned a dog that could be trained to poop on command though. I commend you for being able to do that. Laughing smiley Laughing smiley Laughing smiley Dog Dog Dog Present Present Present

Actually a neighbor taught me a training tip for my dogs. When they are puppies every time they go poop tell them to hurry up. They then associate that as their command to go. It works pretty well unless they're just not ready.

RE: Never had that happen before…

Mine poop on command which used to be a phrase like "go make a pooper." When I named my current dog Cooper it wasn't as effective, but he still goes and does his business in the morning and the evening. He can hold it up to 12 hours too.

Squid Pro Quo

I don't know, "go make Pooper Cooper", sounds pretty good. Laughing smiley Just don't try to say it three times. With most of my dogs, it's more of a plea than a command. "Go potty, come on, go potty. You know you need to go potty.". Works some times, but not always. As you stated early though, even if they go before the beach, there's still a chance they will go while on it.

RE: Never had that happen before…

Well, KDH, that makes you a wonderful custodian of the beach, if not, in my opinion, a most exacting and efficient dog owner.

We should all aspire to such standards.

RE: Never had that happen before…

Perhaps I can help ease some of the discussion here and clear my statement up. When I said walkway, I was talking about my personal walkway, not a public access.
