False Cape Park Bike project...

So, my place is really close to False Cape Park with some great trails and empty pristine beaches with tidal pools and unspoiled nature. I really want to start training with my bike out there this next season THUS, another project. I have 4 old school vintage bike frames that I think are pretty cool. I used to have a bike parts store on EBAY back in the day as a side gig so I have a bunch of spare parts that are RIPE for a Franken-Bike project on the cheap!

RE: False Cape Park Bike project...

My favorite is the very rare, Zemopi Signature, MacPherson frame designed back in the 90's as one of the first dual suspension bikes, made of triple butted 4130 Chromoly steel. It's also crazy retro-vintage looking (even though the 90s seem like yesterday). There's one listed on EBAY for sale for $2000 right now. I bought it at a garage sale for $10 back in 99.

RE: False Cape Park Bike project...

The other is a super high quality retro Trek 990 with a True Temper Steel frame made in the USA with hand TIG welded gussets. It was top of the Trek line back in the late 80s early 90s and used all high end components.

RE: False Cape Park Bike project...

False Cape Park is hard to get to. That's probably why it's such a well kept secret. It's past the very Northern end of Carova and before the Back Bay Wildlife refuge. Right in between two remote beaches. There is actually a nature center out there in the middle of nowhere.

RE: False Cape Park Bike project...

The thing about these high quality steel frames is they sing like a forged blacksmith anvil when you tap them with a brass hammer. They don't make em like that anymore.

RE: False Cape Park Bike project...

Here's an article on the bike "Border Dash" as they call it into and around the FCP that actually starts at the beginning of the 4WD area at Carova Beach in Corolla.

That's a gorgeous beach! Good luck with the bike. Nice project for winter.

Can you sneak fat tires on those frames? While you prob have the leg strength (and air down) to push through the sand it'll be tough going...fattys will help you ride up on the sand; faster travel and see more stuff but still great exercise.

Maybe rent one to see if you like?

Yeah, I can get away with 3 inch tires on that frame. I'll gear it low too, although most of that trail is actually maintained gravel roads and single track. I don't plan on starting at the beginning of Carova Beach since I live at the other end but I have all the local roads in Carova to which are mostly hard packed accept for the roads closest to the beach. I'm looking at these right now...

I dunno squat about where to source/brands fattys but I think they are avail for less that the link...maybe (if not done already) call a few of the bike rental places and ask what they use? Maybe they'll offload a set (last years) to you? As you know, not the ideal time of year (best at end of season) but one never knows!

Happy Trails!

I believe the newer fat tires are too wide for those frames if you're thinking of the same ones I am. My neighbor here has a fat tire bike and they look like they could fit a small car. His bike's fork is ultra wide compared to a normal bike and that thing kicks ass on the beach.

RE: False Cape Park Bike project...

I understand technology has changed, but it still seems weird to me to be talking about biking on the beach. Very cool, but weird.

Those are the 4-5" "Fat Bikes". 2.6-3" or so are called "plus" bikes and some older frames CAN actually handle it. I may have to go 2.8" which is still a lot bigger than you would normally see on a mountain bike. Looking at the GT Frame it looks to have the most clearance so I may have to go with that one, In any case I have about as much desire to ride on loose sand as chew on a bag of wood screws. There are plenty of really good trails on the False Cape.

The first sign that this bike build IS NOT going to get anyone hot and bothered arrived in the mail today! ....THE BIKEROO-PAPPY MCSLAPPY, MEMORY FOAM SEAT!!! YAY! Rainbow USA Flag Cake Clapping smiley Party Not exactly aero-dynamic however, my butt WILL BE impervious to enemy fire. This build is gonna make you wanna Fix-a-Dent and forget it!

RE: False Cape Park Bike project...

Ok so now I have three bikes I'm gonna build, designed for the three stages of fitness I intend to achieve.

Stage 1 bike- "The Pappy McSlappy Stealth" Trek 990. I call it "Stealth" because I really don't want anyone to actually witness my fat ass riding it.

Stage 2 bike- "The don't kid yourself, DKY" GT Outpost, super modified. Named so to keep my ego from taking over just because I lost a few pounds.

Stage 3 Bike- The Herculean Beach Farmer" Zemobi Prototype full suspension. For when people hate me for being all jacked and what-not.

The McSlappy is pretty much ready for stealth operations. So today I'm parts fitting the DKY, nothing bolted down yet, just getting an idea for the design I want. A hard-tail is better for sand because you don't have that squish factor that a full suspension bike has resulting in better traction when you peddle standing up. With that in mind I ordered the Cane Creek Thudbuster seat-post that really helps out for seated riding over roots and bumps. I also added an old Manitou front shock and some BMX handlebar so I'm not in pocket rocket position the whole time. Here it is in concept phase.

BF: I am up late cleaning my VA house before we leave for HI tomorrow to do some projects for a couple of weeks. (I clean my home ridiculously before I leave to go out of town)

I ran across a cool magazine called "The Leatherneck...Magazine for the Marines." I thought of you when I ran across it and am bringing it with me. Maybe we will run across each other and I think you should have this old magazine. Gregory Peck is on the back for a cigg ad for Chestefirld ciggs. It's as old as methuselah and the marine part put me in mind of you.

Don't know if we will ever meet. I would love to mail it to you and if you would kindly private message me with your address, I will certainly mail it to you. Bob Hope is featured addressing the troops. It also has a cool Cherry Point, NC article. The graphics are neat and I think you would like it!

PM me and I'll mail it to you from HI! You know Marines are my fav since my Dad was a drill instructor for thr Marines.

Wow, that's some vintage stuff right there. You might want to see if it's worth something first! That's very sweet of you to think of me. (;

It is old, but I have other types of ones and they will just sit on my shelf! I think you may get a kick out of it!

Edit: And in my old age, it is good to clean out the house somewhat and get things to people that will appreciate them! My daughter always looks at my items and tells me that I need to do this! I guess she doesn't want to get stuck having an estate sale trying to clean out the house!

Thanks for posting. We are looking to get some fat tire bikes for down at the beach. Looks like a fun option.

RE: False Cape Park Bike project...

Ok, so I've decided to make some vintage/experimental changes to the McSlappy. I found some NOS aircraft grade aluminum Mongoose handlebars from when Mongoose was a privately held legit BMX bike company before Walmart bought em out....still in the package! Since the Trek has a 1 inch headtube I can get crazy with it can put a BMX gooseneck on it so I can sit in a more upright position.

RE: False Cape Park Bike project...

Rebuilt the the old Rockshock MAG21, put the required 75ccs of oil in each tube and inflated them to 50psi. This old shock was the dream shock of every serious mountain biker in 1993.

RE: False Cape Park Bike project...

I actually put a black set of BMX bars on with the gooseneck after greasing up all the bearings and pressing the cups on, mounted the old shock and it looks pretty good. Kinda like a Jackalope or something..hehe. Ready for the False Cape Trails tomorrow morning!
