More Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes

Well, a couple of my former Hatteras Realty coworkers just called, freaking out, because Vacasa just laid off a whole lot of people at the local offices here, including the maintenance manager, two maintenance coordinators, several maintenance techs, housekeeping coordinators, and a few others. Not sure what they're planning for this area, but I'm soooo glad I'm not there anymore, and hope everyone will be able to find a decent job down here. Some of these people were like family to me, so it makes me sick to my stomach.

In other news, I haven't seen anyone mention it on this board before, but Brindley Beach from up the beach recently bought out Shore Details here in Frisco.

Found this out when I tried to look up a house we had rented before. Finally found it on Brindley and then found out about the change. Owner says everything is the same this year, but who knows what the future holds.

Sorry to out the layoffs. Service is going to take a huge hit this Summer.

RE: More Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes

Yeah, it makes me wonder how they're going to handle the upcoming season. They mostly left new or newer techs, who haven't been fully trained yet. Some don't even know how to de-winterize a house. No telling what their plans are. Liquidation before a big sale? Who knows? Too early to even speculate.

That is a good point to ponder.

I am afraid a lot of people may have to cancel their plans because of the massive amounts of layoffs being seen.

RE: More Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes

Here's the letter the new CEO sent out.

RE: More Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes

For good , bad or indifferent ~ we do not even consider or look at anything Vacasa manages. Nothing!

RE: More Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes

That will really hurt the employees and the renters IMO. When we were in Frisco two weeks ago, the renters next door were having probs with their water and could not get this company out to check it out. The owner whom we are friends with called hubby and hubby went over to help and switched off outside shower hot line which was the problem. The hot water had been running for two days as there was a crack in the line. Got them set up okay for the night. (Honeymoon couple!!!) If this company cannot handle during January, I hate to see what July will bring.

Sounds like they are jumping on the lay off band wagon.

Keeping newer people cut payroll costs. I survived many layoff cycles in my career. Eventually I was one of the unlucky ones in a group of 75 being notified. Long story short I was rehired. That experience left me with extremely bitter feelings. Those feelings set in motion our moving to OBX in 2004. So what felt like the end of the world turned out pretty darn sweet. That's d a r n.

I'm glad it was a happy ending!!! You just never know what is in store for a person and then you look back and find out it was meant to be.

We are all just a number working for "the man." It's crummy, but that's how it is I have figured out in my 65 years. Glad that chapter is behind me. Lay offs suck and I have been there twice.

Sometimes God has good intentions hidden in disaster! Sounds like you were lucky you got laid off! haha

RE: More Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes

NCSU Dad, I hear you! I told my boyfriend that this may be the very thing to get some of those employees to start looking outside of their comfort zone, because just about everyone I know there was miserable. I was, as well, and taking the remote job I have now has improved my life and mood 100%. Hoping for the best for all affected.

RE: More Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes

I learned that 20 people were laid off here on Hatteras Island alone. Total nationwide was 1,300.

Vacasa's stock tanked and has stayed tanked.

Not seeing it from an owner's standpoint, but ....

Oh, I understand; however, cutting 20+ employees, many of whom had been there 20+ years, isn't going to be good for business either, which is also bad for owners. They were already understaffed on the Operations side. It's going to be a cluster**** this season.

Bingo!

RE: More Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes

As a small business owner, one of the hardest things to do is lay off an employee due to a downturn in the economy. When the economy crashed during the real estate bust-driven Great Recession in 2009 we personally didn’t take a salary for weeks so that we could make payroll and not have to let anyone go. But at some point it’s a matter of cut expenditures or go out of business. Our accountant told us to shut down our operations and close our doors. We hung on by the skin of our teeth for several years and made it through, but that entailed some layoffs - including one of our sons (who wasn’t married and supporting a family). Thankfully we were able to hire him back after a few years, and by 2017 we were hiring, raising salaries and giving bonuses.
Right now we are bracing for a severe turndown and so are many other businesses.

. It might be a good opportunity for those that were laid off to start their own Maintenance Company to fill the void !!

RE: More Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes

I'm with Sandman, I won't rent a Vacasa property. They get awful reviews.

Maybe their rent recalculating algorithm bit them in the ass. Big grin

RE: More Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes

As a repeat obxer vacation person I am sad to see the small companies being bought out. For over 20 years I have used 3 companies to plan my trip. I am having issue this year have you ever tried to use their web site it totally sucks

RE: More Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes

But all I have been hearing (and observing) is that the level of occupancy is very high, even in the former shoulder seasons. The prices charged have risen greatly, far outstripping inflation. What is the disconnect? At least on Hatteras. We have a March and an October week planned through Vacasa and a May one through Midgett. I am hoping they can resist the gravitational pull of Vacasa.

Edit: Checked out the stock price over the last five years. Yikes.

Edit: Letting someone on LinkedIn answer me: "It is clear Vacasa always had more $$$ than strategy/leadership. As a previous Director at a VR company bought by Vacasa, I watched the majority of the units jump ship following the acquisition. Why? Because they felt ignored, disrespected, and like Vacasa did not care about their property. They only mattered until the contract was signed. Sure, you can throw marketing dollars and sales incentives to bring on new units, but the company really needs to be focused on retaining the units they have. Rental owners and guests alike expect respect, communication, and certain standards of property maintenance to be met. Vacasa has ignored all of those things in favor of throwing money into the churn. Until they can fix their product, this company will continue their very expensive demise."
I hope they find a way to turn it around but I feel for the longtimers laid off in this way.

Thank you Jessica and Bent Mtn. We had just booked soundfront in Frisco for June. I just cancelled. We were on the fence about renting from them anyway. If anyone knows of a Buxton or Frisco soundfront home available the first or second week of June, let me know. We are only 3 adults, no pets.

PS-Hello to Bent Mtn! We live in same area. : )

*Formerly Glamazon. I couldn't get into my account.
