RE: Fishing Charter for Friday

I wish I could help you, but it is looking like this Friday's all-day rain forecast is the culprit.

RE: Fishing Charter for Friday

There’s some weather afoot on Friday.

We are well aware of the forecast so forgive me if this is a dumb question...do people not fish in the rain?

Not sure who you are directing that towards but these are wind maps. Happy Thanksgivin

No suggestions, but keep calling around. Those wind maps are for late in the day. The morning forecast looks completely fishable to me. The NOAA marine forecast says 10-15 kts in the morning. I would kayak in that.

RE: Fishing Charter for Friday

Good Morning, I'm a local retired Charterboat Captain. I still own and my Son runs our boat out of Wanchese, but we only do Ocean Fishing. I want to give you an accurate answer. First, we definitely fish in normal rain, Second the current NOAA Marine Forecast for the Sounds is very good for light Winds. You did say Sound Fishing. Right now the most productive Sound fishing is small Striped Bass by the Mann's Harbor Bridges. Backup plan still has some Trout and Drum, but slowing. Your comment on 6 People COULD BE A BIG PROBLEM. Sound fishing is done generally by smaller, open, outboard Charter Boats. The majority of these boats can not fish 6 people comfortably. Most do not have shelter or cabins to get out of weather. So that brings you to bigger boats for 6 with amenities. Not all do Sound Fishing. Why, because they can not effectively do the shallow water Trout and Drum and can have trouble getting in real close to the Bridges. So who will take 6 comfortably and who is available??????? I can recommend Rock Solid, Fish N Fool, and Captain Duke out of Oregon Inlet Fishing Center. Fowl Hooked out of Pirates Cove. You also have boats out Wanchese Marina and OBX Marina in Wanchese. Good Luck and leave a fish for me. Have a nice Thanksgiving. Let me know if you ever need an Ocean Charter.

I had a captain cancel an April trip due to rain, wind and temperature which would have made a morning on a 25’ inshore boat less than enjoyable.
Is there a chance of lightning? If so I don’t want to be on a beach.

RE: Fishing Charter for Friday

Very Interesting Topic. When should a Trip be Canceled/ This original post concerns a Sound Trip, in November. I think some answers have been given, but for everyone's information there are so many variables to consider. Having been in the business since 1959 in both NY and NC, I would say the Captain is almost always right in decisions to cancel. I can go through a long list of conditions. Simply, as a Captain do you want a Family of 6 , with young Children, possibly who really have no experience, spend 4 hours on a small 25' Sound Charter in constant Rain to catch a Half Dozen 18" Stripers? I don't think so, they will never come back. Please understand the Weather Forecast is very often wrong. You have to use the NOAA Marine Forecast not TV Channel 3 in Norfolk. For Ocean Fishing, you first and foremost have to contend with Treacherous Oregon Inlet conditions which might have nothing to do with Immediate Weather Conditions. (That's a story unto itself). Forget about that beautiful Sunny Day, which way is the Wind Blowing and Velocity, Wave conditions reported from Offshore Marine Weather Buoys. On and On and On. Please listen to the Captain.

Advisory

RE: Fishing Charter for Friday

Willie C Charters took us out Friday morning. It started as a rain free morning but as many already know, the rain arrived. We were prepared and kept fishing through the rain. No bites but it wasn't for a lack of trying. Captain Drew was accomodating and felt very badly that the trip wasn't successful. We'd definitely be willing to try again with him during another visit.

It's actually Willy C. Sorry for the typo in previous messages.

Left from Manns Harbor. A quick drive from where we were in Nags Head.
