Water Rescue

Water Rescue

I wish I had my good scanner with me, but I don't. At 120 Ocean Blvd in Southern Shore there is a water rescue going on involving a person who shot off a flare from off shore and there is a parachute involved. One person said they heard an explosion or loud bang.

They are saying it is an aircraft crash - and a parachute is involved.

Some small airplanes have an emergency parachute and there was an ultra lite flying over the beach 2 days ago and the wing looks like a parachute to some degree. We lost a guy in a powered parachute at Avalon pier about 6 years ago. I doubt it is military. They are announcing looking for a missing man 52 in dark clothes. One person made it to shore and that is how they know who they are looking for I guess.

Was it really 6 years ago? Time flies. That was so sad. I would have been at the pier when it happened, but got held up at the house. IT was heartbreaking to hear about. I can't imagine what it was like for the people there.

Hope they find this person alive.

Rodger that. I wonder what the loud boom was?

RE: Water Rescue

They have a dive team or dive platform coming, I have the good scanner now so I can hear what they are doing. Duck Ocean Rescue seems to be the main group in charge.

RE: Water Rescue

From Outer Banks Voice:
The Town of Southern Shores has just released this information about of a Sept. 21 aviation accident in the waters off its beach. One of the passengers is still missing.

At 10:00 AM this morning, an ultra-light glider carrying two passengers malfunctioned and landed in the ocean. One individual was rescued and safely brought to shore. An active search is taking place for the second individual by the Coast Guard, Southern Shores Fire and Southern Shores Ocean Rescue, Duck Fire and Rescue, and two of the beach nourishment survey boats. No names are being released at this time.

RE: Water Rescue

WVEC just posted info about plane accident. Indicated that many resources helping to search for missing person. Prayers...

RE: Water Rescue

It looks like the Dan G boat is running a search grid where the accident happened. Normally that boat brings new crews to the dredges.

RE: Water Rescue

Hoping for a positive outcome.. Red heart

RE: Water Rescue

Scanner chatter does not sound good.

RE: Water Rescue

I got the tail number and it comes back to one of these. Built in 2005, owner is from PA.

Word of warning about ultra lights ..DONT DO IT EVER. I lived with an airline pilot for 3 years he called them death traps. I was also out west when john Denver died in one crash. Never ride in anything that can he built with a kit at home. I had to promise him. And he knows all sorts of planes and was an airlines flight instructor.

RE: Water Rescue

My neighbor has a powered parachute. Where you sit is like the one pictured but doesn’t have any cowling around it. He took me up in it a few years ago. It was really cool and has a pretty good glide ratio if your power cuts.

I feel bad for those in the accident today and their families.

RE: Water Rescue

Very sad incident. Condolences to the family and friends.

I flew in an ultralight club and even owned one (Ultralight Flight Phantom) briefly after getting my pilots license back in my 20’s. Sold it and dropped out of flying due to job/marriage/family obligations, but had a great memorable experience while I was involved with it. Just about every activity out there involves risk no matter how safe we try and make it, even the common practice of driving a car, or those less-than-ideal lifestyle habits I tend to ramble on about…

Have a friend that has owned an amphibious ultralight (weight shift hang glider type aircraft, designated Experimental) for almost as long as I’ve been here since 2007. I’m sure people on this forum have seen him flying locally over the years. A very safe and conscientious pilot that I wouldn’t hesitate to fly with. Cheers!

I flew them for 15 years, loved it and had a blast. What does John Denver have to do with anything? He crashed while switching gas tanks.

Paragliding in the French Alps was nothing short of spectacular

Denver died in a glider in the Rockies with crazy updrafts and erratic flight paths so he was really pushing the envelope. Not all ultralights are created equal. You wouldn't catch my ass in THAT one with the fabric wings, not be cause I actually know anything about it...It just looks flimsy to me. The powered parachutes are death traps too. Bailing out into the ocean in a parachute without a very sharp knife might make you wish you crashed with the plane instead. This poor guy may have sustained injuries before he hit the water. Just said a prayer for the man....

I thought Denver was in a glider in the Rockies, no?

RE: Water Rescue

Apparently it was a kit plane, crashed on the Pacific Coast. Sounds like he was a bit of an idiot..

Click to follow link... ...so I guess JFA was right.

RE: Water Rescue

Regardless of what the craft was and how airworthy, putting anything small in the air with Fiona churning cuts your safety dramatically.

I'm sorry for those involved and their families. Much credit to the Coast Guard and the other vessels who so well mask a recovery effort as a search effort to ease the pain for loved ones. It's a Herculean effort above and beyond the searching itself.

Denver was in a Long-Ez that was built by someone else. It is a pretty easy to fly plane but the builder put the fuel selector behind the left shoulder and Denver was trying to switch it when the tank he was using went dry.

RE: Water Rescue

Well he is a Boeing man. Hates the French made Airbus. used to tell his fellow pilots even friends that flew them that YOU COULD TEACH A MONKEY TO FLY AN AIRBUS. lol. Believe me he spoke his mind. He also knew the ins/outs of crashes especially after 9/11/01.

Turns out your can't, though. Airbus made it bones on the idea it would take human error mostly out of the equation and the computer with redundancies would reduce accidents. But, nope.

Boeing is a far superior product, and there's no computer substitute for a pair of skilled pilots with good CRM.
