Southern Shores NC12 Speed Limit

Just to let you all know that the Southern Shores Board just reduced the Speed Limit on NC 12 to 35 MPH all year round. Down from 45 MPH. I'm a local resident, but I have sympathy for all of you who to go to Corolla on Vacation Saturday and Sunday. Likewise daily traffic especially on Cloudy and Rainy days. Oh Boy!

RE: Southern Shores NC12 Speed Limit

Wow - that will be unpopular! No one here does the speed limit IF they can go faster so I doubt much will change. They are probably trying to get more votes for the bridge that will never come (in my lifetime).

RE: Southern Shores NC12 Speed Limit

Everyone should toot their horn to show their support when driving through... slowly.

RE: Southern Shores NC12 Speed Limit

They're going to love all the newly freed LSVs! Laughing smiley

RE: Southern Shores NC12 Speed Limit

The speed limit on 158 between the Wright Memorial Bridge and the water park in Powell's Point also recently changed. It was 55, now it's 45 mph. This is a permanent change, not seasonal. The bridge is still 55.

"the newly freed LSVs"

I didn't know that LSVs were set up to run 20 to 25. Putt, putt, putt.

"LSVs may be driven on roads with a speed limit of 35mph or less. As required by Federal law, the motors are built to operate between 20 - 25mph."

All of my recent experience has been with the rental golf carts in Ocracoke - as measured by the portable radar signs they have on the shoulder - is that they don't go much faster than 14 to 17 mph. The one we had all of last week was 15 with a tail wind. And then there are the folks who won't run them wide open. smiley

Fwiw, the speed limit in Ocracoke is 20. For everyone.

RE: Southern Shores NC12 Speed Limit

I rented one today to haul people to the beach access. It is street legal and I have yet to get it up to 20mph. It has a speedometer.

RE: Southern Shores NC12 Speed Limit

It looks like it is causing the bridge to backup up, something not that common unless there is a wreck - or barricades.

Tim is that what you use to take people to the Duck beach access points?

Looking at that map, my thought was that they could rename Caratoke Highway the Karaoke Highway => to honor the people sitting in traffic singing the blues.

at this point I am fully committed to setting up for travel to and from Knotts Island .

Soon enough this will be me.

The bridge was backed up because there were so many cars trying to get into the left turn lane for the cut thru.

Would an air boat work for you?

A couple of days ago we were putt-putting around Ocracoke with the dog and ended up on the sound side at the end of Esham Lane. There's a private ramp there with a chain across it, but a nice view. That day there was a man backing in a very, very nice black air boat. You know, the kind you see in the Everglades with the engine and huge prop on the back.

I would love to see something like that as well as riding in one (and owning one)! So neat that you saw one! I would think that you could go anywhere in something like that! Ocracoke always has stuff that you just don't see on the rest of the OBX! It is truly unique.

Ya know I just don't know about airboats. They seem awesome but I imagine the attitude and controls take some getting used to. I do like the idea of less boat in the water, especially with all the shallows and marshes around here.

RE: Southern Shores NC12 Speed Limit

Air boats are great to skim over shallows and marshes. But they are very loud and gas hogs unless you are going flat out barely touching the water. They are great over calm water but will beat you to death over waves.

Kinda like a Carolina Skiff! I swear one time I had neck injuries going under the bridge at Oregon Inlet in one of those! Give me our catamaran where the waves are cut thru and no beating! Our boat is so smooth in rough waters! Yay to the Kattitude! Our little 20 foot ProKat! Wouldn't have anything else after years of so many boats that we have owned and tried. Hubby drove to Fort Myers FL to pick up the Kattitude and we have been so happy with her.

Carolina skiffs are great until it's 3 footers, rhen you need a catamaran until it gets rougher and starts 'sneezing' and then you need a Chesapeake deadrise ro cut through that. No one hull design works across all conditions.
