Standard Wheelchair Rental

Looking for information on where to rent a standard wheelchair. Not looking for a beach wheelchair for the use in sand. I did see that Beach Mobility has those. They seemed to only offer the option of a standard, for an additional fee, if you rented the beach wheelchair for the week. My mother in law has mobility issues because of age and vision. Thought it might be a good ideal for her when we are out shopping etc. and she becomes unsteady or tired. We will be staying in Duck. Anyone have suggestions? Thanks in advance.

RE: Standard Wheelchair Rental

Its very odd that I cant find anything locally to help you. LOCALS Where do you get your medical supply equipment and delivered? I checked Grandy too. Not to stir the pot with the big population on the OBX now. they need their own MAJOR hospital.

RE: Standard Wheelchair Rental

If she doesn't normally require a chair what about purchasing a nice walker? We bought this one for my mother in law and it's really nice. It has large wheels and rolls well over bumps, has a nice storage area beneath the seat, and the seat is strong enough to hold a fairly large person. It has locking hand brakes to keep it in place if she needs to stop and rest a bit, etc. The price varies by color, but both are probably less $$$ than what a weekly chair rental would cost if you can find what you're looking for. This walker folds down and doesn't need a ton of space, but you would need to account for it when packing. Click to follow link...

Took a look around and this is the only thing I found - may be worth a call.

There are "transport" wheelchairs that may be worth looking into. Not sure of cost or if you have room to pack one.

It might also be worth discussing with your MIL's doctor and her insurance (including Medicare iif she is on it) to see if they'll cover anything.

That's about all I can offer up.

Good luck!

OK, for whom do we need it? The Outer Banks Hospital has a good emergency room, which is what the tourists mostly need. The specialists and surgeons you'd find at a MAJOR hospital don't have the work here 7+ months of the year to pay them and keep them.

What we really need, REALLY NEED, is primary care physicians. We need them all 12 months of the year! At the moment, there is a huge shortage.

Just For The Beach in Corolla in the shopping center across from the beach access. Not as far as Food Lion. $21 a day or $65 a week.

Bear Drug in Kitty Hawk rents regular wheelchairs. I rented oone after I had ankle surgery and had to be non-weight bearing for 3 months.

Unfortunately their are shortages of Primary Care Physicians Everywhere since less and less people are going into the field. The Urologist I go to had 28 Doctors 10 years ago. Today they have 16, and three are retiring in the next 6 months. They have a full time person who looks for new doctors. They hired two but they don't start for another 12 months. They only got them because they signed a contract with them, the group is giving each one up to 100K to help pay off their student loans
