Not a great week for Hatteras - communication down




After 12 being closed most of the week, houses collapsing, crappy weather...I feel for everyone down there right now.

Now if stuff like this doesnt scare the all amenties please renters away...pay big bucks for a nor easter and no internet/phone service. just wow. dont mind me, I "vacationed" the week after Sandy. We still talk about it.

The HAM radio group on Hatteras is keeping in touch with Manteo via radio. I am hearing it is a fiber cut between Oregon Inlet bridge and Rodanthe. Service is coming back slowly so the end is in sight. Our radio club is standing by to make 911 calls if needed. So far none

Just reported = they found the cut and are working on it. Century Link says all finished in 6 hours. Hopefully less.

FLASH FLASH - Reports off Hatteras are that families are looking at each other and talking. Parents are interacting with teens with no cell service.

Could this become a destination?

So last night with no communication hubby and I did what we normally do read books and listened to Radio Hatteras, This morning while waking up I flashed back to the PSA and realized the sphincter-tightening response it must have had. "You may have noticed you have no internet, cell phone or land line availability. All our 911 operators are off island. If you need emergency services, you will need to drive to one of our fire houses, emergency services building and/or flag down a policeman"

I flashed back to my childhood - they were calling for evacuation before a storm and my mother said "this house is all we have, if a storm destroys it we have no reason to live". I was like "um Mom - I am 9, I ain't ready to give up just yet'.

We were down almost 15 hours. After digging and finding out the world was not ending, we searched for places open,
and found Neptunes, which was taking debit cards. Place was packed, had live music, and was a blast. The folks that live here are the best.

It all depends on how you look at things. Best part there, no one was on their phones..

We are back up today and looking forward to more rain .
