RE: 100 dollar boat project...

Took a screwdriver to get the old impellar out but amazingly it was not dry rotted

Holy crap, I though it would have been dry rotted and turned to dust Lol

I'm really glad to see that impeller still in one piece. I cringed when you said it fired right up a day or two ago because I have heard about impeller pieces getting up into the cooling channels and causing major overheat damage.

Now I need to find out why I'm not getting water. The channels WERE full of sediment and crap but I'm wondering about the thermostat. They call it a "vernatherm" and there is virtually no info on how to get to it. I think it's at the junction of the two water lines attached to the heads.

RE: 100 dollar boat project...

I might have missed it in the replies, consider changing out the thermostats along with the impeller.

Well I'm trying to take your advice but I'm a little befuddled as to where the heck they are? I'm thinking they may be under the cylinder head covers?

RE: 100 dollar boat project...

...I just looked up the motor and based on the model number it is a 1973 which is strange because the title says the boat is a 75.

The motor may have been swapped out at some point. Easy enough to do for an outboard, as opposed to inboard.

This can be a real bear on those old V4 OMC motors. I also try to only use GLM parts when working on the cooling systems of these models, they have great exploded diagrams on their website. Check out this link and it gives you a couple of options.

Hey Thanks D. I was on Crowley Marine's site last night way past my bedtime looking at exploded diagrams and realized that whoever put this lower back together after changing out the impeller last time didn't replace any of the grommets or seals or gaskets....at all. lol. They were just missing. Thankfully they have the parts but they ain't cheap! I'll see what your guys can do on the price.

RE: 100 dollar boat project...

So I just got finished rebuilding the water pump with an Evinrude OEM parts kit. Wire wheeled all the surfaces, replaced the impeller, housing, all the gaskets, grommets, O-rings and seals. Everything got new stainless bolts with a good lithium based marine grease going in and all the gaskets and seals got Permatex .

RE: 100 dollar boat project...

The lower is back on and I'm not even gonna try hooking the linkage up till I get direct sunlight into the dark hell hole it sits in. It's Miller time!

RE: 100 dollar boat project...

Ok so shes showing her age a bit. Found some Rot around the motor mounts so I took the engine off, removed all the rot and suspect fiberglass until I hit solid wood and thick strong glass. Then I removed all the glass and wood, good or not, and quick fabricated a 1/2 inch aircraft grade aluminum plate to size across the transome length and drilled holes to mount the engine. Next step is filling it all in with Splash Zone Apoxy. Crazy strong stuff. Lucky for me the fiberglass on the transom is over an inch thick!

RE: 100 dollar boat project...

The upper amounts are good. The plate and the entire area beneath it will get apoxyied in with Splash Zone.

RE: 100 dollar boat project...

Let's see if I cant get to work with some polishing compound as well here. Its gonna be interesting to see the before and after on this old girl.

RE: 100 dollar boat project...

Looking pretty rough up close

RE: 100 dollar boat project...

Looks like Shes been strapped to that trailer since 1996.

RE: 100 dollar boat project...

The former interior now in a pile. I ordered 3 inch foam and Marine grade vinyl in off white. I think I can salvage the seat frames.

RE: 100 dollar boat project...

Lookin good!

RE: 100 dollar boat project...

That's really impressive.
I could have had a free boat project a couple of years ago when somebody dumped one on our road just off Osborne Turnpike east of Richmond near the Henrico County boat landing. It was a little more work than I wanted to do at the time, but I would have liked to have had the outboard.

RE: 100 dollar boat project...

Just the right size for a free boat

RE: 100 dollar boat project...

Suzuki 150 SuperSix

RE: 100 dollar boat project...

I would have needed a bigger shop vac. And a dumpster.

RE: 100 dollar boat project...

Man, I would have jumped on that one. Like you said the Motor alone would have been an awesome salvage. The boat looks like a Sportcraft to me. Hard to tell . Most of that ugliness will come right off with a pressure wash. Probably have to replace the floor and at least reinforce the transom but everything seems so much harder to do until you do it. That could be a great boat. My dream is to have a shop big enough to roll a 30 foot boat in to work on under cover with power and A/C....Sheer luxury. (;

RE: 100 dollar boat project...

Ok, today I'm going to attempt an upholstery upgrade on these long wasted boat seats. The frames are still good so I bought some marine vinyl and some three inch foam. I'm cutting out the bases from a piece of plywood. Well see how this goes. This is the closest I get to arts and crafts so I'm considering a beret for effect? Ok maybe not.

RE: 100 dollar boat project...

Off white vinyl. They say you should let it sit in the sun before wrapping it on the base. So I'm gonna lay it out and hopefully make it more pliable.

RE: 100 dollar boat project...

3 inch foam
