Possums have moved in.

I have seen at least 1 possum run into my shop/storage building at night in the last week. Whats the best way to deter them or get them to move on?

See if this guy is still around. A friend used him and was amazed at what he can do with critters in his attic space.

Count yourself lucky. They are known to eat cockroaches, slugs, beetles, rats, mice, etc... it's like having a full time pest control service. If you catch em send them over to Duck we could use all the possums we can get.

RE: Possums have moved in.

They are just looking for food. They love to explore trash cans. If they persist, you can harmlessly use a Have-a-Heart trap to capture them. Available from Lowes, etc. around $30.

"Y’all know me. Know how I earn a livin’. I’ll catch this bird for you, but it ain’t gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down to the pond and chasing bluegills and tommycocks. This shark, swallow you whole. No shakin’, no tenderizin’, down you go. And we gotta do it quick, that’ll bring back your tourists, put all your businesses on a payin’ basis. But it’s not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I’ll find him for three, but I’ll catch him, and kill him, for ten. But you’ve gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter. I don’t want no volunteers, I don’t want no mates, there’s too many captains on this island. Ten thousand dollars for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing."

Friend and colleague was over for dinner 15 years ago. We were out on the porch. She is from UT. Had never seen an opossum.

One was in the backyard. Look of horror on her face.

"WHAT IS THAT!!!"

"It's a possum. They are so ugly that they are cute."

Pointed to another friend and colleague from the south that was over.

"I have old cookbooks from library book sales. They eat them in the south. I have a recipe."

Should have seen her look at that comment.

The friend and I bought her a plush opossum. She moved back to UT in 2007 and still has it.

...and squirrels, and cheeks and chitterlins, too. If it moves, we can roast or stew it.

Nothing. baits gone. No possum. No ride to Duck. No possum stew. Nothing.

Might have to get creative with your bait placement. I had that problem with a Have-A-Hart trap I used in my attic many years ago. The little bastage squirrel kept getting the chips I put on the tray. I finally caught him by putting a shaving cream cap full of water on the tray. Boom! He was thirsty and got caught.

True Possum Story

My Grandad had an old Mule that died. It was drug to the edge of the woods. Possums being possums, saw that as a meal. Entry point of the mule was the anal region. Had my Dad and Uncle stand by said entry hole with a burlap sack snug up to it. Smacked the possums belly and out they came into the sack. Purged them with bread and milk for a few days and next thing you know, dinner is served. The other white meat!

Yep...... Did what you had to do back in the day on the farm to survive.

Did you mean to say smacked the mules belly? Where can I get a dead mule?

Yep. Smacked the belly with a big ole branch to run the critters out of the mule and into the burlap sack. My kin were a tad country......
