My daughter loves the sound of cicadas. She lives with her fam in Chicago and evidently does not get to hear them...if they are even there...maybe a southern thing and I'm not sure about that. For her, it brings up memories of her childhood in Virginia and she absolutely loves to hear them. Thanks for that little memory. I will share this with her. She's a summer girl and is pining for the east coast. Thanks for all of your lovely postings!

I'm from NC, so it's a sound I've heard a lot growing up. I love that sound. My wife took a video to record the sound and send it to our kids. Wish it was easier to post videos here.

This honestly sounds like the best vacation ever. So jealous, but very happy to read it. Keep them coming!

My wife and daughter drove up to Michigan to visit my sister-in-law. With our son at college - that left me alone. I almost jumped in my truck and headed down there. My plan was to make the 14 hour drive, get my feet wet, soak up the air, spend the night in my truck, and make the drive back. Even had a bag packed. But alas - I didn't go. So I'm really appreciating all of the reports right now.

Thanks to all the people posting!

Wednesday, 9/8

Larry is sending us some big surf. During high tide there's very little beach left here. I love the sound of the crashing waves though. We decided to take a trip up north. We stopped at the Pea Island visitor center to look at the surf. Wow. There were a few surfers our there and they were catching massive waves. Several people with video and cameras around. I didn't bring my camera up, so I tried to take a few pictures from my cell phone. They don't look anything like what was really out there. Oh well.

We kept going up to Kitty Hawk to the craft and arts show in the Hilton. My wife bought some stuff including another mug from Swell Ceramics (StephVA's daughter). She loves her work. We also chatted with the NEST people and bought a couple of shirts.

Afterward we went over to Manteo and got lunch at the Hungry Pelican. We got take out and ate it in the parking lot. They were good sandwiches. We went over to the Elizabethan Gardens and walk around for a bit. It was very hot and humid with barely any wind. There also wasn't a lot in bloom at this time and it looked a little unmaintained in areas. Kinda disappointed in the gardens because we usually love them.

Afterward I texted a former OBC member, obxmini (BB), and she invited us over to her house on Manteo. We sat on her front porch for a couple hours chatting with her and her husband. It's nice putting faces to people you email or text with. We were also supposed to go over to JimmyZ's house for drinks, but I told him we weren't going to be able to make it up this trip. Maybe next time.

On the trip back south we stopped at the Cockeyed Clam for dinner. They had a few tables outside and we were able to get one. Food was very good and the hushpuppies were really good. We got an order of them to go to reheat tomorrow.

When we got back we walked down to the turtle nest to check it out. It's gone! It was there this morning, but it's gone now. The water did get above the nest, so I wonder if they excavated it or maybe the turtles hatched. Don't know. Will need to ask around.

Just relaxing for the rest of the night listening to the surf.
