I don’t see a spot on the tail of that fish. Looks like a Croaker to me? Your thoughts?

Squid Pro Quo

Pretty sure it's not a croaker. Didn't croak and was very slender. No hint of stripes. Agree on no spot on tail (thought it was just a mutant). I'm changing my answer. Sea mullet. Big grin

Just give it a squeeze and you know why they call them croakers.

RE: J4yDubs 2021 Hatteras Village Trip Report

Enjoyed the fish porn.....I agree it appears to be what I would call croaker...but technically croakers are in the drum family. Water is beautiful right now, enjoy your visit!

RE: J4yDubs 2021 Hatteras Village Trip Report

Nice reports. Making wish I was there.

Yea that one is a mystery. Could it be a Northern Kingfish rather than a southern Kingfish(sea mullet)? The brownish color is what makes me lean that way.

Monday 9/6/21

We don't have any preplanned schedules this trip other than a dinner reservation Tuesday night, so we're just winging it. This morning we lounged around until around 10am and then went to the beach. The surf is starting to get a little rough. Not bad today, just confused. No clear break. I went for a swim while my wife watched closely. I don't go as far as I used to, but it's still to far for her.

The shelling has not been very good so far. I put on goggles to try to find some, but it's not great visibility. I found a couple, but so far it hasn't been good. Maybe Larry will wash up some.

We packed up around 12:30pm and after a quick shower we decided to take a drive and find lunch. We ended up in Rodanthe and ate at Las Ahumaderas food truck. I has the shrimp quesadilla and Robin had the fish tacos. The food was good, but not great. I'd eat there again, but would try to find something else first.

On the way back we stopped at Sunrise Seafood in Avon. Got some shrimp and hushpuppy's for dinner. There wasn't a lot of selection. That seems to be the case all over. Harbor House is closed because they don't have a good local selection right now.

We went to Conner to pick up a few things and then went over to The Old Gray House. Bought some stuff and chatted with the owner for a while. She knows me from our previous trip and bugging her for pelican stuff. Wife loves pelican stuff, so I bug several locals here.

Lounged around for a little bit before I went out surf fishing. Robin stayed home and read. This stretch of beach is very popular for fishing. I'm guessing it's the density with the condos and cabanas. I'm used to being one of maybe 2-3 others on the beach surf fishing. Here there was probably 10 others. Spaced out fine, but a little closer than I'm used to. Guy to my right crossed my lines twice. He didn't have great control over his cast. Got skunked tonight. No such thing as a bad day fishing though. It was still great!

Came back and Robin had the shrimp and hushpuppies on and almost ready. Dinner was very good! Sat out on the deck and ate way too many shrimp and hushpuppies. Chased it down with a few cold beers. Ahhh. This is what a vacation should be.

Dolphins this morning. Have seen them every day so far.

Umm, what day is it? Tuesday 9/7, I think.

Slept in a little today. Felt good. We cooked breakfast together and afterward went for a long beach walk. Shelling is still not very good. Hopefully the waves tonight will bring some in.

Just lounged around for most of the afternoon. Reading, sitting on the deck, watching and listening to the surf, doing a whole lot of nothing. It's awesome! Saw a ton of dolphins this morning. They were pretty far out but it was pod after pod. Over a hundred easily in a 30 minute span.

We had reservations for Cafe Pamlico tonight. We arrived a few minutes early, but were seated immediately. Outside dining with a great view. All the food was excellent. Easily the best we've had in a long time. We stayed around 2 hours and watched the Blue Heron's battle for their territory. The sun was setting when we were done, but it hid behind some clouds, so no sunset tonight. As we were leaving the Cicadas were very loud in the trees out front. It's the first time my wife has heard them and she was amazed at how loud they are. They sounded great to me.

When we got home, we check for a red light at the turtle nest. Nothing yet. Maybe tomorrow.
