Midge Mania

Midge Mania

Made an account just to post about this, maybe get some help/perspective/ideas/commiseration.
The midges are so bad. Weve been coming here for years, over 20. New house for the first time in 17 years this year. We are plagued by midges. Our first night we made the mistake of leaving the windows open with screens in them. Since then we have not opened a single window. They are covering the deck, the windows, the screen porch. We go and we spray them off but the next day there are just as many of them. We can barely even leave the house at certain times, lest we invite several hundred in through the open door.
We have dealt with bugs of course, but never as bad as this. Is there any hope they'll die off soon? Is there anything we can do? We cover the windows and lights at night, to try to keep them from swarming. Insecticides dont seem to do anything. They are out during the day and the night, all the time. There is no respite.
Went to take a shower the other day, found thousands of them in the outdoor shower, crawling out of the walls and floor.
We are here till mid July at least, and really hoping we get to eat dinner on the screened porch one night, or watch the sunrise from the porch one morning.
Any and all advice and tips are appreciated.
Location: duck/sanderling

RE: Midge Mania

I'm sorry they are ruining your vacation. I'm heading down to my house tomorrow. When we were there a couple of weeks ago they were terrible but they were worse the first week of May. Please know it is not the fault of the homeowner. In 15 years of ownership this is the worst I've seen them. This is the worst season I can remember. If you are in KDH the town sparays for mosquitoes late at night. I think the "blind mosquitoes" are laughing at this. I was hoping it would be better this weekend. Shut off all lights and cower inside after dark. Sad smiley

The good news is they do not bite. Just imagine of they did! Thumbs down

RE: Midge Mania

We were there last month in KDH and had several awful days with them. I sprayed them with everything from Lysol to hairspray to no avail. All you can do is pray for a good old North East wind. We found that if the wind kicked up enough and was a bit cool, we could go out and knock them away. They couldn't hold on in the wind and moved on elsewhere. When it was warm and still they would just return as soon as we knocked them away. When they get in the house we use the vacuum hose to suck them off the walls and ceiling. They aren't very fond of that either. Good Luck!

RE: Midge Mania

Light attracts them and it seems to me that many renters leave on lights ALL night either they are afraid or just don't know some are on. The midge lifecycle is just a day or two so let them enjoy their time with you. Theeth smiley
