RE: Bbq

We like High Cotton

RE: Bbq

Sooeys is our go to BBQ in that area. Not only is the BBQ good, they have an outdoor seating area that was pet friendly. They actually brought us a water bowl and treats for our dogs. That said, we have not been there in a few years so things may have changed or the quality may have dropped.

RE: Bbq

Based on your parameters, I would second High Cotton. If your up in Corolla, get some at the Corolla Village Bar-B-Que....best north of the Bonner in my opinion.

RE: Bbq

I like High Cotton BBQ but they don't off cornbread as far as I know. The owner of Soey's also owns Shipwrecks and Sea Scape Grill so BBQ can be had at them all.

RE: Bbq

Pigman's BBQ in KDH is our go-to! We were born and raised in Western NC,but love Eastern style BBQ! Try it,they'll have you squealing for more!! Theeth smiley

Correct me if I am wrong but east vs west NC BBQ is all in the sauce. If you have a vinegar sauce it's eastern and if ketchup is in it is something else (I prefer something else) smiley with shades

And now I am thinking BBQ and its noon so off to High Cotton.

RE: Bbq

Sooey’s makes the best eastern NC bbq and their collards are to die for!

RE: Bbq

^ Don’t know about their cornbread I always make my own. The only restaurant cornbread I love is Lone Cedar’s

RE: Bbq

Tim...you are correct! Here we have what is called Lexington style,it's thicker and made with molasses tomato sauce that makes it a little sweeter. You will also get red slaw if you don't ask for mayonnaise slaw.

Would second Sooeys.

They were dog friendly in 2019 (didn't make it down last year). Will check again in May

RE: Bbq

Corolla Village BBQ had the best pulled pork sandwich that I have ever had.

I’m a real jerk and quite critical about food.

That scary looking little white shack deserves a damn Michelin star for what they put out.

Haven’t had it since May 2019.

RE: Bbq

BBQ is in the eye of the beholder ( or beer holder). Far too many variables to know what you like and how it is prepared.
I will say that High Cotton makes good BBQ ribs and at $19.00 a rack a la-carte they are priced reasonably.
Our entire family enjoys smoking our own ribs and that includes the prep the rub and the smoking ( 3-2-1 method with a few tweaks) so by and large I don't shop too much for BBQ. I will say that on hatteras Crazy Johnny's BBQ ( he is the butcher at Connors) does a good job if you do not want to cook.
This year we will be bringing the pellet smoker down to make some on our own and smoke some seafood as well.

RE: Bbq

They all are good, but our #1 is pigmans.

Corolla Village Bar-B-Que ????

RE: Bbq

Whenever I'm in the mood I go to Carolina BBQ in Manteo (they are only open 11-3) and get the collards, barbecue and brisket, and just make the cornbread at home. I grew up in Wilson NC so I'm a little spoiled, and I've tried every BBQ place on the beach. I think theirs is the best.

I've thought about stopping by Basnight's on the way back from Manteo to see if I could score a couple of loaves of cornbread but have never made the call to see if they will do it. Plus I sort of feel like Basnight's changed their cornbread "recipe" a while back, it's nowhere near as fluffy as it was, I don't think it's as good as it used to be.

Just my $.02!

RE: Bbq

Well it’s been a long time done I dined at Lone Cedar so maybe they have changed the cornbread. That would be too bad

I agree with your take on Corolla Village BBQ. I have eaten there multiple times and was very impressed with the quality of their food. I never really cared for cornbread until I had some of theirs. It was amazing! I have not had their food since they recently changed ownership.

Their Facebook page looks current. It was listed for sale a year or two again, not sure if it sold or what.

Another vote for High Cotton. Prices are reasonable too, compared to a lot of the other places.

Regarding, the East vs. West debate - Eastern sauce is vinegar-based and Western sauce is thicker and sweeter, often having ketchup and sugar or molasses as ingredients. Even though I grew up in the mountains, I prefer the vinegar based barbecue. The Western NC style sauce goes beyond the state borders - similar sauces are made in southwestern VA, southern WV, southeastern KY, eastern TN, western SC, and northern GA.

The only barbecue I can honestly say I don't care for are the mustard-based barbecues that I've seen around the SC "Low Country".

RE: Bbq

Not to wander too far from the topic, but Currituck BBQ has GREAT burnt ends. Thumbs up

RE: Bbq

Another second for High Cotton. They also sell great tea by the gallon -either sweet or unsweet.
I would go there just for the tea !

RE: Bbq

Corolla BBQ reeks of liquid smoke. Doesn't make it good. High Cotton is better.

RE: Bbq

Plus the workers at High Cotton are just so darn nice (we've had multiple great experiences over the years). It makes me feel good spending money there.
