Refrigerator Shopping




My 11 yr old fridge is on limited days, I am looking for a replacement and we want 3 doors and looking at GE and LG. I have eliminated the others and going with a 23-25 cu ft.

LG reviews are not great for parts and service, is that real or coincidence?

Tim, GE also has what is called the Cafe line. We replaced our fridge a few months ago with a 4 door GE Cafe, absolutely love it. The extra door can be used for multiple things, we use it for lunch meats and cheeses. Biggest complaint is the small ice maker. Here is a link.. Click to follow link...

We have an LG with the french doors and bottom freezer. It’s 23 cu. ft. We love it, but we bought one without water on the door and we removed the ice tray and turned off the ice maker. We don’t use ice and the big complaint on the model we got was that the ice maker supply line would leak condensation onto your floor. That suited us since we were going to take it out of the loop anyway. For space and useful layout it’s been awesome. We’ve only had it 8 months though. At the beach is a GE which is also nice, but the freezer drawers are flimsy compared to the LG in my opinion, just going by the feel, they’ve not broken.

Just don’t buy anything Samsung.
Our $2000 Samsung refrigerator bit the dust just a few months after the 5 year warranty ran out as did the Samsung dishwasher. Our $$$ 5 year old Samsung washing machine almost burned our house down. They couldn’t have cared less.

Tim, the house we just bought has close to the same GE. It's great with one PITA caveat...they "require" a special, expensive ($50 a pop for 6 months use) "RPWFE" water filter. I've googled trying to find alternatives (nope) but I see there are "hacks" but haven't tried anything (yet). The gimmick is the filter has an rfd chip.

GrandpaD ... do you have to use the filter because of the chip? My non-GE refrigerator has a bypass loop available from the manufacturer so i can eliminate the filter. Looks like a little filter cartrifge. Water is just for the ice maker.

FWIW, JD Power ranked GE last in the french door model back about 3-4 years ago when were shopping for a new one. We ended up with a GE side by side because of water and ice dispenser on the door and had a much better rating. The ice maker, ice bin and dispenser take up a lot of room but we have a second frig/freezer for extra storage. Bottom freezer ice access is a pita, we had it in a vacation home last summer. Pull open the freezer, pull out the ice drawer, grab some ice, push drawer back in, push freezer drawer closed.

Yep, the chip is factor. And they changed the fitting (so I've read) so the non-chip version won't work anymore. Our fridge dispenses water as well as ice. No bypasses I've seen in googling.

Tim - Just glanced at Consumer Reports for French doors... The top 9 are either LG or Kenmore. A GE comes in at #10. Many in their article, though, are older models.

I like and buy Bosch appliances, but pricey.
They stand behind the product and Warranty
BUT in OBX there is only one certified repair person, but It does not stop me from buy Bosch.

My son is a high-end builder and from what I hear most big box appliances have a planned obsolence...about 5 years. He says GE means "Good Enough".

Tim, it has been about six years since we purchased our GE from Manteo Furniture, but it is very similar to what you are considering, Ours has a water/ice dispenser on one of the doors and another ice maker in the freezer drawer below. We love it (touch wood)!

Tim, at home we have LG with bottom freezer compartment and the two doors up top, we have had it ten plus years. The ice maker stopped working few years ago, Mr Virginia looked at youtube videos, ordered replacement kit, and replaced the ice maker himself in about thirty minutes. The finish on a corner of the outside was messed up and has a small area of rust, but cosmetics don't bother me.

You got plenty of advice. We standby GE, But just to add my two cents, stay away from LG Appliances. Our family experiences are way less than satisfactory . This also goes for Washers

Moving into our newly built home in another month.

It will have the GE Cafe Line installed.

I previously had the top of the line Samsung French Door unit. It was in my PA house and was 8 years old when I sold the home. In those 8 years here is what I had done, none at warranty.

1. Ice Maker replaced
2. Cleared blocked drains that caused an ice buildup in freezer two time.
3. Came down in the morning to find the unit is 'Store' mode which means that compressor shut off and stopped cooling.

Never found out why #3 was happening but it stopped doing it after about 2 years.

LG and Samsung are close in price and quality and I would never buy either again.

Had numerous issues with an LG Dryer.

Bosch equipment is definitely worth the price. I agree. The best all around.

I am limited to a 33 in wide one. Thanks for the tip. I am going to call Smith Appliance today to ask which they prefer since they do my repairs.

Interesting!! They are getting like printers and their ink costs. I wondered why the fridge has Wifi, what does it need Wifi for?

Thanks, my wife is keen on the LG one. I gave up on Consumer Reports a long time ago since much of what they report on is out of date by the time they print a review. I am calling my repair company and ask what they suggest.

When we bought our first replacement refrigerator on OBX we bought the biggest CF we could squeeze into the recess in our kitchen. After losing the entire contents a few times during power outages we downsized to a smaller refrigerator.

We're looking to redo our kitchen and I've pretty much settled on the GE Cafe or Monogram lines. If you look hard enough, you'll find good and bad about all of them.

WIFI is just something else to go wrong, why would you need it in a rental.

We had a GE like this several years ago. Hated it. It wouldn't keep the ice cold (the ice is in the refrigerator portion, not the freezer) and it would constantly freeze solid. We sold it less than a year later. Couldn't stand that fridge. I'm not sure if they've improved the system, but if not - the ice maker sucks on it.

If 'Tim' is the normal type husband, he will have input to the refrigerator type,BUT the Mrs. will make the decision.
