Electric Bike Rental

Electric Bike Rental

Hi all.
My family is planning a trip to Corolla for July 2021. I am considering renting a couple electric bikes for the week. I know traffic can be bad in Corolla. If you have used these bikes in the area, is it worth it? I know that it will not be 100% safe...but what is?

We will be a mixed group including a couple of healthy 70 year olds, several middle aged people and kids from 16-19. I like the idea of being able to pedal when you want some exercise but also being able to have an assist if its is too hot or if we go a bit too far. Seems like it could be fun.

I say go for it. I bought one at the end of the summer season and I love it. We live in a 55+ community and they are very popular with the older set. It is no more dangerous than a regular bike and you choose what level of assistance you want.

Bike Trails on the side of Route 12. It is quite safe

I bought a RAD a few years ago and road it around the area. I hated being on the beach road! They are HEAVY and hard to haul around so keep that in mind.

Thanks for the info, Tim. My plan would be to have them delivered and picked up at the rental house....then just ride them from the house. I have a mountain bike and enjoy riding it. Do you like riding the electric bike (other than beach road)? I think I am definitely going to rent some type of bikes while we are there...just trying to decide if it is worth the additional expense to go electric. As always, thanks for the input.

I have and M2S and love it, got it last March. I do a 50/50 mix of street and open trail / gravel road riding. My main riding route is 19 miles. Usually I have 50% of the battery left when I'm done. I ride on level 1 or 2 out of 5. Build quality for a $1500 bike is every good. I have 1200 miles on it and have replaced the disc brake pads three times which takes about 10 minutes

I sold my electric last year because how many times do you want to ride to the monument or around your house? For you visiting it would be great. The electrics are really no effort at all to peddle depending on how much electric assist you ask for. I see people wiz past my house on them and they don't even peddle. You can go 20-40 miles depending how much you peddle and they do small hills with ease and that is all we have here.

If they ever get the improvements started & finish along Colington Road I'm thinking about buying an electric bike to travel to the beach. It's 6 miles from my driveway to the bypass. I saw a 20 something guy riding a regular bike with a small 2 stroke gas engine added to the bike & pushing it along this week. Being an old timer that is even more appealing. Takes me back to my mini bike days where you built it rather than buy it..

I did not like the beach road, I doubt Colington road would be any better. The battery alone costs $500 so leaving these around can be expensive. The battery is removed with a key so the bike is less appealing to steal since it is a bear to peddle with no battery assist.

Interesting, mine is actually pretty easy to pedal with no battery.

What is it about Beach road that you don't like? Road conditions or traffic? Just curious because it seems like a pleasant cruise in a car.

Unless NCDOT has changed the plans for Colington Road the improvements will included bike lane(s). As is bike riders on Colington Road are risking their lives riding this road.

Oh - the traffic and the fact you are inches away from death. If you come up at the same time with two cars passing each other and you on that bike it is pretty tight.

Nags Head has the multi-use path that runs on the beach side of the beach road, makes for much safer and less stressful biking. Just gotta watch out for pedestrians and other bikes. Runs from 8th Street at the KDH/NH line to at least Jennettes Pier.
