I know of Jockey's Ridge.

Many sound side access roads along Rt 12 on HI - If you have a beach driving permit you can drive in, if not park by the road and hike in. several nice areas north of Avon

Whalehead Club in Corolla.

Hatteras Landing in Hatteras Village.

I have no idea if this is a good spot, but it would be a nice place to investigate. There's a huge mound of sand immediately behind the Pea Island Life Saving Station. From the top the you have awesome 360 degree views and depending on the time of year the sun should set just over or near the building. There might be some construction equipment in view right now though. We were there in November, but I don't have any pics towards the west from atop the mound to check. It's a cool place to visit at any rate.

We enjoyed it here the one time we made a point of being there for the sunset.

Except, some would say, north of Macs (aka Liberty/Island Convenience) due to the Jug Handle.

Any one of a large number of soundfront rental houses in Avon. Another great place is Cape Point- because of the curvature of the island from Cape Point you see the sun set over the ocean.

RE: Best places to catch the sunset?

In the Northern Banks the Duck Boardwalk is good (photo below) as well as up in Corolla at the Currituck Heritage Park (Whalehead Club).

RE: Best places to catch the sunset?

The Duck Boardwalk is a great place to get some great sunset pictures.

RE: Best places to catch the sunset?

Another at the Duck Boardwalk.

Gents, those are spectacular! Another spot is Watermans (Hatteras Island, specifically Waves) - excellent food, if wind off the sound, tons of folks riding out on the "slick".

The day use haulover just South of Buxton not quite half way between Buxton and Hatteras, otherwise known famously as Canadian Hole. This is a legendary windsurfing and kite boarding spot. Nothing here but a parking lot and a few picnic tables. Epic sunsets with amazing water sports to see as well. Worth a visit!

Another Canadian Hole shot

Another at the Duck Boardwalk.

I have a few like that. That particular tree rivals the Lone Cypress in Monterey.

RE: Best places to catch the sunset?

I love trees in sunset pictures

RE: Best places to catch the sunset?

Near Whalehead

If you are in Nags Head, Millers Waterfront Restaurant. We try to go once each visit, although we didn't make it there this past year, not sure about their COVID restrictions but they had outdoor seating on the sound when we were there last in 2017(?). The photo is from 2013

I definitely agree with the Whalehead Club area. Plenty of space to spread out from others and enjoy the view. This was taken from there a couple of weeks ago.

But don't forget to look out your house's windows. We often forget what is right in front of us.

RE: Best places to catch the sunset?

This has certainly turned into a beautiful thread. Here's a sunset from Bay Drive in Kill Devil Hills.

Is there really a bad place to watch the sunset on the outer banks? That’s one of the reasons we love being on the sound. For about 20 minutes a night everyone gets up to see it. It never gets old!
