Hampton Inn Corolla or Hilton Garden Kitty Hawk?

We are going for 5 nights end of this month. Can't decide on which place to stay. Just my husband and I so we really don't need a house. I find it so hard to find a place in OBX for just the two of us. Last time we stayed at Surf Side, but their price is a good bit higher than the two I mentioned. Any Advice?

I would also consider checking for a partial week condo stay with some of the realtors. Of the two I would go with the Hilton Garden in Kitty Hawk due to it being more centrally located.

I would choose Kitty Hawk too for the same reason above. HIGH COTTON BBQ and DUCK DONUTS are just across the street AND so much shopping available up/down that area. Quicker to get in/out of the OBX as well. I also liked the soup at that carribbean style restaurant. they used to have a fish pond to feed the fish in front while you wait.

I've stayed at both the HI and HG. The Hampton Inn is very laid back as you would expect for Corolla. Dune deck is great. Multiple very friendly cats. Great beach area.

The Hilton is better if you want to be "in the action". Close to shopping, restaurants. The pier is cool too.

How about the Corolla Village Inn, if you don't need a house, but don't want a "hotel hotel?" smiley

We went to the open house when they first opened, and it looks very nice.

Since jfalba started the restaurant comments. . .

Also in that shopping center is Vilai Thai. They're more a takeout place than a dine-in place, but if you like Thai, you'll like their food.

The Caribbean place he's referring to is the Rundown Cafe just a few doors south of the shopping center.

High Cotton has gotten lots better this year, and we regularly get take-out from there. If you add their vinegar sauce to the BBQ, it's a good approximation of real Carolina BBQ.

Further south on the beach road are Ocean Boulevard (upscale dining), Art's Place (great burger joint), Hurricane Mo's (one of our regular places in normal years), and Black Pelican (a great local favorite, but we'd give it mixed reviews).

In the Southern Crossing shopping center a stone's throw to the north, there's Steamers (again, mixed reviews). One pizza place there, Southern Shores Pizza (good) and just beyond the police station and town govt center, another, Pizza Stop (better, but more expensive).

Finally, just beyond that in the Marketplace (Food Lion) Shopping Center, Barrier Island Bagels has great breakfast bagels.

Don’t know what current amenity policies are for these hotels. Here’s what I like about each.

Hampton Inn – only been there off season for easy drive to Horse Tour. Request higher floor to see ocean over dune. Loved the evening cookies, free breakfast. Nice pool area, dune walk over with small sitting area and steps. Clean, quiet and not crowded beach and hotel.

Hilton Garden Inn – stayed every month of the year. Coffee and tea in the lobby area. Courtyard evening fire pit with rockers, nice pools, dune top deck with high top seating and rockers & beautiful view, free easy access to KH pier for fishing or just a stroll. Beach can be busy but still plenty of room, usually have beach chairs available. Ocean front corner rooms or side ocean view are my first choices. Clean, nice property. Great staff, any issues easily handled by front desk.

I've done the Hilton Garden Inn there a few times. I also exclusively use Hilton for business travel so I cash in points to stay there so I am not exactly impartial but here are 3 reasons we stay.

1. You have a pier just outside. Fish or just walk out there and enjoy the view.
2. Walk to Duck Donuts in the morning if that is your thing.
3. Close to everywhere North or South as a starting off point if you are driving.
4. Beach is right there and they have an indoor pool as well.

Depends on what you are looking for. You want more peace and quiet, laid back, beach, then I would do the Hampton. You will have to drive 15-20 minutes to Duck or Corolla proper for restaurants. Nice pool area, beach and breakfast area.

Hilton is closer to stuff as others have said. Food walkable.....Rundown is very good, High Cotton OK.

Yah, go with the Hilton. It's 20 miles closer. Walmart, ABC store, Giant, Harris Teeter, Wendy's, soon to be Taco Bell all right down the street. Run Down Cafe's poke appetizer is super!!! 5 miles to Duck, all the KDH/NH stuff within reach. Maybe it should be renamed the OBX Command Center!

Don't get me wrong......i owe a lot of good times to the Corolla area, but the last many years have been spent about 10 houses up from the Hilton Garden, so in my opinion you can't go wrong!

I would highly recommend the Hilton Garden Inn. We were "forced" to stay there at the beginning of our week in August due to the hurricane/storm. The staff was awesome and the access to the pool and beach was great. This was a surprisingly good option for us given the situation.
