We had about 12 hours left on an evacuation and I called to see if we could get a quick Ocracoke trip in (5 P.M. evac) . So I called the ferry people and this very nice man with a huge southern drawl proceeded to ask me "whereabouts are you at now". I informed the kind gentleman that I was in Avon. "What you need to do is to get on Highway 12 and start heading north". His tone was so dry and so southern I can still here it from 25 years ago. They came thru town with the antique fire truck that day proclaiming on loudspeaker mandatory evacuation dangerous hurricane approaching. Well we had 8 kids ages 3 to 8 that year and half of them started crying cuz they were scared to death. So we moved up to my parents beach house in Delaware where the hurricane made landfall. I believe it was Bertha.
