Yup, was just reading the press release by the county. Click to follow link...
Looks like they'll be discussing any evacuations later this morning. They're certainly not messing around.

Makes good sense

RE: Ocracoke Closed - What's This?

Wow,

The Hyde County Board of Commissioners met this morning, July 31, 2020, at 8:00am to enact a State of Emergency in advance of Hurricane Isaias that will go into effect today, July 31, 2020, at 8:00am. Ocracoke entry will be restricted immediately. Only residents, homeowners, vendors, and other essential personnel requested by Federal, State, or County officials will be allowed access until further notice. You will need an
Ocracoke re-entry pass on the vehicle or adequate documentation to be allowed on ferries inbound to Ocracoke beginning at 8:00 am today, July 31, 2020.

The Ocracoke Control Group will meet again this morning, July 31, 2020, to discuss any future protective measures needed. Decisions on evacuation orders will be released shortly after the completion of this meeting.

How long until Dare Co. follows suit?

RE: Ocracoke Closed - What's This?

It is going fly by us faster than any storm I have seen in years if this is correct. I hope it does!

A couple of us noticed last night that it looks like it is supposed to really speed up at SC/NC. Hope that holds true. Current Corolla forecast is for only 40 mph winds and not that much rain. Keeping my fingers crossed, especially after the mis-forecast that was Matthew 2016.

RE: Ocracoke Closed - What's This?

I think they just want to get back at the insurance companies Wink smiley

RE: Ocracoke Closed - What's This?

Given how taxed their infrastructure still is and how much they're still recovering from Dorian, this gives them the best chance of not having things get worse than absolutely necessary, especially if this is moving fast and churning waters.

RE: Ocracoke Closed - What's This?

They are probably very concerned about the ability of the ferries to run when the storm gets closer. I had read a while back that shoaling was affecting the ferry routes.

RE: Ocracoke Closed - What's This?

Not Good For OBX.....and beyond!>> Strong Cat 1? Too early for Intensity....Models wrapped tight for track!
See Model Track>>>

RE: Ocracoke Closed - What's This?

Haven't the ferry runs to/from the island been reduced due to shoaling? Limited ferry runs could limit options for getting folks off the island in a timely manner.

Yes..According to Hyde County meeting yesterday, the reduction of ferry schedule was a factor in evacuation/restrictions early decisions. Evacuation order will probably come today........How and when will Dare County react?

They might not if it does not get much worse. Cat 1 are not a huge problem if they go past quickly. we get cat 1 all the time with no issues sometimes.

RE: Ocracoke Closed - What's This?

Saw this and it made me chuckle.

RE: Ocracoke Closed - What's This?

What Tim said. Still three days for track and strength to change. Where I live it's all about the soundside flooding, if it stays a Cat 1 and moves fast that shouldn't be a problem. (Locals should get their hurricane beer now though.....)

You guys up north are far better positioned than "down south" on HI - if Isaias does an Irene 2.0, flooded guest vehicles are problematic. As we all know...it's not the wind (which, of course, it "can be") it's the water....

Latest from Dare County..

Local officials will confer on Saturday morning to determine whether protective measures are necessary to ensure public safety. Based on the current forecast, visitors scheduled to travel to the Outer Banks this weekend are advised to closely watch updated information from the National Weather Service Center and consider delaying arrival until after the storm has passed.

I would think a decision will be made within 24 hours...

RE: Ocracoke Closed - What's This?

Lots of scare talk going on here. Go to hurricanes.gov and look at the 5 PM discussion.

1) Yes, there are still lots of uncertainties, particularly about the track. It is possible that it could remain a Cat I hurricane for a while around Florida.

2) The most uncertainty in National Hurricane Center track predictions are 5 and 4 days out. (From an earlier NHC discussion). Today is day 4.

3) None of their models is predicting really bad things for us. Their best guess right now is that the winds going over the Outer Banks on Monday will be in the 20-30 mph range. And as has already been said in this thread, their best guess is that the storm will come and go VERY quickly.

If you want to be on top of what's happening, read the NHC discussion (hurricanes.gov) and look at their updates after 11 PM tonight, 5 AM tomorrow, and then 11 AM. By then they should have it pretty well nailed down.

Don't watch television or online weather. Rely on NHC, second choice is the National Weather Service (at Moorehead City).

And stay out of the water because, rip currents.

RE: Ocracoke Closed - What's This?

Everyday winds here are 20-30. I would expect the winds and gusts will be double your guess. Hopefully it passes quickly and leaves lots of rain.

Omg “Covidcane” caught on!!!

Lmao

.

RE: Ocracoke Closed - What's This?

No one that's serious about hurricane information watches the Weather Channel. It's completely useless at this point. Covidcane is pretty funny though.
