RE: America should be better than this

Some of the people on this board should be ashamed of themselves. What a disgusting display of what America is not about. The selfishness, hatred, and lack of empathy is uncalled for and just shows how quickly some people completely lose their minds when they become scared. In a time when everyone should rally and support one another, we instead see people only thinking about themselves. I thought we were better than that. USA Flag

Unfortunately, you are correct. So disappointing what the OBX community has become. America is about sticking together. Lending a hand to your fellow man. Not pointing fingers.

Thank you five o

RE: America should be better than this

Yes, we should be. But shifts in societal behavior has made deep groves in our collective psyche and as a result, we aren’t as understanding or welcoming or neighborly as we were just a few short decades ago. And as this lack of positive interaction takes an invisible toll on us, we become territorial in our behavior which, in turn, lessens positive interactions even more. **sigh**
And the fact that the majority of us live with a cell phone attached to our hand 24/7 doesn’t help the matter.

The book “Bowling Alone” examined the phenomenon of the breakdown of community in America and is a real eye-opener if anyone is looking for a reading suggestion. It came out in 1998 I believe but is still relevant today in a “big picture” sort of way.
Maybe the pendulum will swing back and we’ll head back to a more “Andy of Mayberry” type mentality someday and lose some of this “me-me-me” mentality.
One can hope.
We love Hatteras Island because it still has that “neighbor caring for neighbor” feel to it although I’ve a noticed a subtle change even in Hatteras over recent years.

Anyways, far too in-depth of an answer so my apologizes. As an educator now sheltering in place, my mind is getting restless..peaceful wishes to all...

RE: America should be better than this

Yup, FiveO, not what it was. The board could benefit from a moderator and some leadership.

RE: America should be better than this

The attitude I have seen from locals absolutely breaks my heart, even more than the death toll. In the end it is sad that people will die, but people die everyday from any number of things. What is even more sad is that we can not be understanding and compassionate. Locals blaming non-residents and tourists and non-residents not thinking of the locals. I lived in NC for 10 years and loved every min of it, neighbors helping neighbors. I used to say I love the OBX because even though mother nature takes her toll they pick themselves up dust each other off and say "I am here to help". We bought a beach house in Rodanthe this past July because we wanted to retire on the OBX. I really and truly loved how neighbors helped neighbors......this has completely changed my thought. We are non-resident home owners who are now faced with no rental income to help pay a mortgage and expenses (including all the work we paid locals to do) and reading nothing but hurtful things from a group of people who apparently hate us and want to blame us for everything. I have even seen a petition wanting to bar non-residents from the island indefinitely. We are all under a lot of stress. I feel that this has shown the true colors of the OBX, and it crushes me Sad smiley I wish everyone health!

Moderators won't change who we are. It has been a wake up call to watch people reveal themselves and show their true colors. Who they really are. Thumbs down

RE: America should be better than this

Look at the headline to this post. Dragging down America because of some posts from both sides of a issue.
Back in the real world we’re working together. For those of you staying at home the grocery store workers, media workers, public safety workers, volunteers, we’re all doing amazing work in trying times. Cleaning ourselves and our equipment, maintaining our composure as we deal with the fear of going out. The country is doing a amazing job of trying to keep this from becoming worse.
One little backwards island has decided to be selfish, just because they can. Out of fear. Thats not America. Just one small bit of a much bigger picture.

RE: America should be better than this

Thank you, FiveOJoe.

Let's resolve to do it right.

RE: America should be better than this

Thank you Old Greybeard for reminding us that not everyone is sitting at home fretting and criticizing. This is a great country.

RE: America should be better than this

This is a life-threatening situation for everyone. Whenever a widespread and very real threat to life comes up, all the variety of human behavior comes out from behind our social norms.

It is perfectly normal for people to be upset and some will lash out. It is not reasonable to expect everyone to act like angels when they are truly afraid. All the aspects of human nature will emerge: selfishness and genenrousity, bravery and cowardice, realism and retreat into fantasy, etc.

I am doing my best to suspend judgement on anyone in these times of a real threat to life and the fear that it causes.

Being in the northeast, it seems that the only time Illinois governors and other politicians are in the news here is when they are convicted of a crime and herded off to jail. Saw the current Illinois governor on TV the past two nights. Talk about someone that looks like a gangster. Theeth smiley

C'mon, Paul, how does this really help the conversation and further the spirit 5OJoe is trying to promote?

Be cautious
Be patient
Be careful
Be kind

Relax your shoulders, unclench your jaw, inhale, exhale, just breathe....and wash your hands.

I feel for you "ABUNCHOFCROOKS, having vacationed on OBX, (all over) for 17 years, different home each time and hoped like crazy we could retire there eventually. After reading bumper stickers about "Tourons" and reading certain blogs here, no way..not another dime spent in OBX. We decided that last year. Very sad because we loved it but decided with the attitudes of some that our money would be spent better elsewhere, Maybe the neighbors in SC could put up with us "Tourons"....sorry.

RE: America should be better than this

The "stay away" mentality is happening everywhere that is considered a vacation area. This is not just a beach thing, here in PA the Poconos are completely overrun by 2nd homeowners, this is possibly one of the reasons why typically small counties in the NE of PA have multiple cases of COVID19. We are about 1.5 hours from NYC and an easy "getaway" for city dwellers.

RE: America should be better than this

So is it me or is the thread going the same way as the others that proceeded it? Everyone seems to want to blame someone. Change the way you look at things and the things you see will change.

There are a lot of movies on netflix like this. Film

This attitude makes me sick. While I'm sure it's mostly a few loudmouths it is still disheartening

ish

Take heart, AbunchofCrooks, as the group behind the lynch mob access closure and that petition is a social media group of about 3k people total. It's not just FT residents, but lots of others as well, and even then it's less than 10% of the FT population of the Outer Banks.

The people pointing fingers at others, and scremaing the loudest are just more terrified and hateful, not more right or representative of the whole.

And worse, they believe being behind a curve without flattening the curve means they're safe from the virus. You can't reason with irrational people, even if you want to offer them supplies or help them get testing. You can just remember they're not representative of the whole.

RE: America should be better than this

I've got to side with old greybeard on this one. Without people that own a 2nd home in these "resort" areas, the "locals" wouldn't have many of the services they now enjoy. The NRPOs pay they same taxes(more if they rent their house) and use a fraction of the services. That OBX hospital, as inadequate as some say it is, would not be there without "outside" investment in the economy. Those restaurants and retail establishments that the locals enjoy would not be sustained without NRPOs and guests of the "vacation areas". Yes, there are some of you that would love the OBX of 50 years ago, but do many of you even know how to live like that anymore? This is not an us v. them post, this is a please show some respect to the "tourons" and "non-locals" that also contribute to the OBX and vacation areas we all enjoy.

FYI, I don't own a home as a first or 2nd owner. Just a concerned renter for the past 20 years that spends a lot of money to rent and while on the OBX.

This is just east of us. In our township we have 250 residences. Over 1/2 are camps/vacation homes. They pay 1/2 the taxes and tourism supports much of our lifestyles. Many camps are occupied now. Glad they made it, hope they are safe.
