Update Article On New Ocracoke Passenger Ferry

I've been wondering how this project was coming along. Looks like the builder has lawyered up! My guess will be spring 2021 for completion.

The whole thing is an absolute ****-show. Good thing NC-DOT got their hands on a decent rental in the meantime.

Awww man, you should be careful what you say...................you might end up as John Doe # 6!! I was gonna say something like 'they built the Titanic' quicker, but i don't want to be sued for defamation either.

Yes, the whole thing is a circus. My contention from the beginning was that a ferry should be leased for a year to see if this was viable. Last summer it proved to be viable. The leased boat came from Martha’s Vineyard. They are leasing the same boat for this summer. If it continues to be available for lease in the summer, it is obviously not needed in Martha’s Vineyard. Just buy it!

The other piece is that we really need 2 boats for more daily trips including a late evening return to Hatteras. While the schedule was changed mid season to push back the last daily trip by an hour, it really needs to be later to allow more visitors to get a great dinner at our local restaurants. Changes in the landscape here mean that the restaurants that are open will be slammed this summer.

I remember they brought in a test boat (I think it was on it's way back north from the Caribbean for the winter) a few years ago that they used for a test run. The most logical thing would have been to do a season or two in a rental to test the proof of concept. Last year it was popular because it was 1) it was novel, and 2) much cheaper than the original target cost of $15/pp round trip ($2/pp one way).

I agree with you that a second vessel is necessary to run the route with more regularity. Ideally it would be great to do a long term lease on a ferry that spends its winters in the Caribbean and spends summer running the Ocracoke route. To me, having a ferry sit all winter doesn't seem like a good use of capital. That said, there's no way NC Lawmakers are going to let NCDOT spend that much money without producing some NC jobs for NC businesses.
