Taylor Pork Roll or Pork Roll or whatever it is

I know many here rave over the pork roll so I am letting those people know Spanky's has it again for a limited time. I had one last time he had them and it's good. I eat at Spanky's once or twice a week. Tell Ben Tim said HI.

The price of $7.28 for their pork roll, egg and cheese (Jersey Breakfast) is a little more than what we pay here in NJ....a Jersey Breakfast here are usually $6.50 - $7.00. Only differences in Spanky's place and up here in NJ is that we have it on a hard roll (crusty, Kaiser-like roll, not a soft burger roll) or to a lesser degree on a bagel, and we most always have home fries on the side, not French fries.

RE: Taylor Pork Roll or Pork Roll or whatever it is

and we most always have home fries on the side, not French fries.
And not fake home fries frozen from a bag that looks like sad little potato cubes or god forbid the shredded ones. . The real deal sliced and diced, crispy on the outside, onions salt pepper and some paprika on them.

Can you get a hard roll outside of Jersey? There's nothing like a buttered hard roll with coffee in the morning. Kaisers are just a poor 2nd cousin to the real thing. And I know this is not the correct forum for this but its been slow lately and I digress!

I too am adding to this thread that has become hijacked, but to answer your question......I do nor know for sure but have yet to see them outside of New Jersey save for New York City. A hard roll, sliced in half and smothered with butter is on any breakfast joint/deli worth eating at. I have asked for a hard roll in many states over the years and I get a blank stare and/or questions as to what are you taking about?

… A hard roll, sliced in half and smothered with butter …

Made me think of something that happened when Nan and I lived outside Frenchtown, NJ 25 years ago.

We were at the little diner in town having breakfast. An old lady comes in, sits at the counter, and starts loudly rapping the counter with her knuckles. She gets served.

I asked our waitress what that was all about. She explained that the old lady does it all the time. Comes in and bangs on the counter to get served. Orders a toasted English muffin with butter and a coffee. 85 cents. She leaves a dollar. The waitress said she isn't going to jump through hoops for her 15 cents.

Can you get a hard roll outside of Jersey?

I started dating my wife over 30 years ago when we worked at the same company in NJ. We would frequently get sandwiches at Annie's Deli and bring them back to my office. I would always get the same thing. Nan asked what I wanted.

"Sally Diplock on a hard roll."

"I already wrote it down."

SALLY DIPLOCK Roast beef - melted cheddar - worcestershire sauce - tomatoes - Russian

If you don't live near a bakery, the larger grocery chains usually have par baked 'take-and-bake' rolls that you finish in the oven when you get home. Wet the tops for a crispier crust before you bake them.

Its so true Robert, I have had the same experience all over the place. But I remember my Dad getting some pretty decent rolls down in Destin FL, in their latter years, crazy huh? He was the kind of guy that went out for the morning papers and came home with fresh baked rolls and danish.

There used to be a donut chain in Buffalo that sold buttered hard rolls. Some diners up there also had them as well.

Google says a hard roll is a Kaiser (aka the Vienna Roll.....never heard that one either). Is it or isn't it the same thing as a hard roll? Google images returned pics that were clearly a Kaiser, but also of another roll similar in shape, yet more sinister in nature.

I've never heard of a hard roll, but i live well with in the area that is the focus of this conversation. I also claim expert level knowledge of pork-derived breakfast delicacies. My pork roll credentials are solid as i am a strong proponent of using it instead of Canadian bacon on on eggs Benedict (though i wish them made a reduced sized pork roll for this purpose)!!

that said, and nothing to do with pork roll, i whole heartedly agree with the home fries comment above. HOME FRIES DO NOT COME IN CUBES!!!

A Kaiser roll is fairly close to a "hard roll" but not the exact same in NJ (or probably in NY/CT and maybe PA). When you go into a deli or bakery in NJ you ask for a "hard roll". Based on eating Kaiser rolls outside of the NJ/NY area I would say the NJ "hard roll" is crustier than a Kaiser. They look similar with the "five segments, separated by curved superficial cuts radiating from the centre outward".

And in NJ you would never ask for a pork roll, egg, and cheese on a Kaiser roll. You would ask for it to be on a hard roll.

We have friends who are from Brooklyn N.Y. Who moved here and operate a very successful bakery. One of the owners told me that in N.Y. a buttered roll was a very popular breakfast order but here in PA nobody ever asks for it,

The buttered roll or buttered hard roll is on most NJ deli menus.

Brings back memories. I'm 87 now but when I was in my teens, my Dad was German and owned a bakery and made the best hard seeded rolls. My lunch almost every day, when i walked home from High school almost a mile away, was Taylor Ham and Bread and Butter pickles on a hard seeded roll. Makes my mouth water.

I'm going to have to try the pork roll with B&B pickles on a hard roll. Thanks for the inspiration.

RE: Taylor Pork Roll or Pork Roll or whatever it is

Here are NJ hard rolls from a local bakery. Lather them up with a lot of good butter with a cup of coffee and your good to go.

RE: Taylor Pork Roll or Pork Roll or whatever it is

^ And THAT is the perfect roll!!!
