What's in a Beach House Name?

RE: What's in a Beach House Name?

Until recently, there was house on 8th Street at the KDH/NH line named "Breaking Wind". It changed a year or so ago, presumably when someone new bought the house.

RE: What's in a Beach House Name?

Probably name a house that would mean something to my daughter since she likes the band nirvana and kutrt cobain. But I have to look at lyrics for awhile. . she wasn't even born when kurt died.. Band names or songs are a distinctive choice

RE: What's in a Beach House Name?

Perhaps if I owned a house I may care but as a renter I must say I give zero figs about the name of a house nor do I care about house signs.

RE: What's in a Beach House Name?

Our rental house is in Villages at Ocean Hill, and its on Ocean Hill Court, and since our last name is Hill the name seemed kinda obvious “Hill Cottage”

Our other house is named after our dog Gryphon !

And lastly we have a 1.75 acre semioceanfont lot up at the Virginia line that we named “Breezy Point” after Breezy Point NY where my family had a beach house when I was growing up.

RE: What's in a Beach House Name?

"What's in a Beach House name?".....is a great question...and one i've been trying to answer for close to 4 years. I purchased a home in the Currituck Club a few years ago and left the name "Sugar Shack". My property manager confirmed it causes confusion with rental guests if you change the name of the home. That being said, "Sugar" is a play on the last name of the prior owner. Prior to that, the name of the home was "Chip Shot" in relation to the golf course that is located within the Currituck Club.

For the past few years, I have been trying to dream up a new name. For quite some time i favored "The Alchemist's Sound". The house is on the Currituck Sound. And for those of you have read "The Alchemist", well, my life's journey has led me to exactly where I've always belonged- The Outer Banks Red heart Rainbow . Unfortunately, the name "The Alchemist's Sound" has been met with A LOT of resistance. Some say it's too hard to pronounce and some say it's too cerebral. That name just resonates with me...for so many reasons. I do have a back up ..."Imagine". Now, that's a concept that resonates with everyone! Wink smiley

You should just name it whatever you want, if you keep it with the same company the house number will always be the same

Jeeze you’re a bit grumpy today huh?

RE: What's in a Beach House Name?

My fave of the bunch is fiddler on the reef and going coastal. I hate to say it but if I think the name is cute I will check out a house more.

I agree; both made me chuckle. I get a real kick out the clever names and I, too, have been known to take a look at a house based on it. This year we stayed in a house call The Defense Rests. We chose it as it met all of our criteria but it was rather ironic as I do defense work. My husband could never quite remember the name and kept calling it the Law and Order house. LOL

Don’t let the naysayers talk you out of it. The Alchemist’s Sound is an excellent name. Much better than “Feeling Beachy” or some other dime a dozen name.

The Defense Rests is also a good one.

Several others I have found that I thought were clever are “Without a Porpoise” which is a Lewis Carrol reference and Echapper Belle which is a French phrase which loosely translates as “to make a beautiful escape”.

RE: What's in a Beach House Name?

We named our house Craic'n Crabs. I had many renters of Irish descent tell me that that name got them to look even though we were only a 3 bedroom home.

RE: What's in a Beach House Name?

When we bought our house in Nags Head it was named "How ya Doing?". I'm originally from NJ and I thought that was a little too Jersey for me. I thought about renaming it "Dune Fine" to maintain the theme, but never got around to it. We no longer rent and the house didn't have a sign so now we just call it our beach house.

RE: What's in a Beach House Name?

Here is the list that we used when considering a new name for the house. We changed the name of the house in conjunction with moving to another property management company in 2015. I ran the list by the new management co. and I starred the ones that they liked the best.

Just Beachy
How you Dune
Pelican’s Roost
License to Chill **
Ocean Perch
Lookout
Bikini Bottom
Seas the day
Siren’s Song
Front Row
Shell Yeah
Afterdune Delight **
Crabby Paddy
Crusty Crab
Ghost Crab
Fiddler on the Reef **
Beachy Keen
All Decked Out
Going Coastal **
Pelican's Perch
Whale's Tail or Whale's Tale

I like Life's a Beach

Zanadu. With a Z because my sir name starts and ends with Z. Also because it's another great Rush tune. Which brings up something totally off topic for folks with NJ ties. The failed Xanadu development next to Met Life stadium nearly 20 years in the works in Rutherford NJ, has finally partially opened under the name "American Dream". My son got a part time job in the Nickelodeon theme park. It will be the largest mall in the US, even bigger than the Mall of America. I work a few miles away and am not looking forward to the added traffic and congestion, but that will just make our OBX getaways even sweeter!

I looked at a house the other week up in Ocean Hill. Any thoughts on the association?

RE: What's in a Beach House Name?

Atlantic Dreams is ours. Came with the house and it was a good fit so we kept it (off of Atlantic Drive and a Dream to purchase it).
Others that were in the running, most are have personal meaning:
A's obsession, bc my hubby called me obsessed with buying one ;)
Right place, Right time
Land Cruise
Time Thief
It's Science, cause we are scientist ;)
Crooks Cove

We looked at a house that was next to a house named "one fish - two fish" we were going to name it "Red Fish - Blue Fish" if we bought it....our boys favorite book so much they would recite it all the time

RE: What's in a Beach House Name?

Our beach house name is our brand. It should not only be memorable, but also be unique enough that it can be found in a simple internet search. We don't do the traditional "toss the keys to the PM and let them deal with renting it" thing so it's important that guests be able to find us online and be able to book directly with us.

RE: What's in a Beach House Name?

We went a kinda different way with our house. We met in Germany and lived there for 12 years before moving to VA in 97.
In German the noun "waves" is Wellen. The word Vergnügen does not translate directly but basically means to have a good or enjoyable time. You may remember old VW commercials that used the term "Fahr Vergnügen", meaning an enjoyable ride.
So. we named our house in Waves "Wellen Vergnügen", or having a good time in Waves, but also enjoying the waves.

RE: What's in a Beach House Name?

Hill Cottage? That's too close to the horror movie Hill House for me. smiley

RE: What's in a Beach House Name?

We used to go to the L"il Drafty Tavern in Nags Head when we first started visiting Nags Head. Our favorite drink to start our vacation was a seabreeze. So when we bought our small Beach box on the ocean in SNH we called it L'il Seabreeze.

RE: What's in a Beach House Name?

We are penn state fans so we named our house Nittany Ly'Inn. Once we moved here

How about Sandy Grinch or Sourpuss.

RE: What's in a Beach House Name?

Fore Decs - Dec is our last name. Fore can be a golf or nautical term depending upon your preference, and both mean vacation activities to us. Lastly, there are four of us in the family. It has personal meaning to us, probably not to the guests.
