How Late Can Sod Be Installed On OBX?

Colington Harbour. Is it too late? If not too late any recommendations for installers?

Thanks!

Not an expert but new home in our neighborhood was just professionally landscaped this week and a large lawn was laid. I assume the cooler fall weather would give it a chance to get a good start.

I’ve put down sprigs of beach grass in the Fall, but not sod. Is your sod coming from a local mainland farm?

October is a prime month here in PA to put down sod. Right up and a little past the first frost. You should be good for a while

We had sod and irrigation installed in early November last year in Nags head. Worked out well. We had 3 different estimates and went with J Appleseed Landscaping. They subbed out the irrigation to Albemarle Irrigation. Very happy with both companies.

I assume the sod would come from an Eastern NC sod farm. I'll be sure to ask. We had a new bulkhead installed during the summer. Now our backyard is 75% sand i.e. no grass. The other 25% is grass & weeds that was undisturbed during construction. I tried planting Bermuda grass from seed with zero germination. About a month ago I seeded with a tall fescue and it germinated somewhat. I think growing grass from seed is a losing battle with the 2 dogs racing around the yard.

Our place is flat 1/2 acre. Had centipede professionally installed end of October a couple years ago. No irrigation as I'm retired and had no trouble moving a couple hoses until it got established. Type of grass is a personal preference, but my Bermuda loving neighbor hates me because he has to baby his lawn and I don't do anything but lightly fertilize in late spring with centipede specific product. No weed/feed stuff allowed! We have a lab mix rescue running around the back with no issues. Outer Banks Landscaping did the work.

NCState dad I'm surprised you don't know about this site TurfFiles | NC State Extension Lot of good information here on what is best for NC. The link didn't show up. Sorry about that. Just do a search on what is above.
As far as your Bermuda seed comment, you have to make sure to purchase scarified seed to insure germination. That seed has a hard cover and doesn't absorb water very well-so no germination. Or you could pre-germinate it by pouring the seed into a bucket of water for a day or so. Zoysia seed is the same.

We got our sod from Macon Turf Click to follow link... and am planning to get more in a few weeks... I would think it would do quite well now that the intense heat is gone. We went with centipede, prepared and "laid down" the turf ourselves in our backyard... Now it's time to attack the front "field". Wink smiley

Actually I'm acquainted with the site. Good information. I've also used the soil testing services provided by the state.

Thanks for the link. I was wondering if I could do this myself. Laying the sod in 150 sf sections at a time. I'll give them a call.
