Got to love DMV

Got to love DMV

Need to renew my license and I want to do the Real ID license. I read you can get an appointment so you do not have to wait forever Only problem how do you get an appointment. DMV webpage says you cannot make an appointment online. Does that mean you stand in line to make an appointment to avoid waiting in line to get your license??? Does that make sense.

RE: Got to love DMV

My wife and I moved here last year. We did the real ID and it was a nightmare. Make sure you have all originals of all documents required.

For example if you're married they do not accept the marriage certificate from your church you have to have the one issued by the county.

RE: Got to love DMV

I made 3 trips totaling about 4 hours total wait time to accomplish the task you are trying to do .Good luck. I would suggest going to a mobile dmv bus . I hear they are normally very slow and rarely used.I would have gone the bus route but my license would have expired before the next convenient one.

I think you can call? We moved here last August and "studied" for the test!!!!!! We were from out of state. Fortunately, I had all original documents (birth certificates etc) but we were renting at the time and they didn't accept our lease (which included utilities)!!! Again, fortunately, I had gotten the branch manager of our Manteo bank to write a letter verifying our address - and, believe it or not the second person in the "process" accepted it!!!!!! Insanity. I felt as though I was in a Kafka novel.

Fast forward 7 months later, we had to update our address on licenses and registration - first go round - the site didn't recognize our address. I waited about 4 months and thank goodness it did and all worked out online - and we got our re-entry passes.

I will tell you that if you have everything in order it is possible to escape the DMV in less than two hours if you time it right, with a REAL ID license and live to tell about it! Lucky

RE: Got to love DMV

It took less than five minutes for me in MD and I was able to schedule an appointment online.

Kinda amazed that MD got something done better than NC. MD even had separate offices setup for people who had appointments.

Sounds like the NC DMV is a ward of the state like here in PA. My drivers license was up for renewal in February. I looked into the Real ID and read horror stories about wait times. I said screw it, I still waited 3 hours for my new regular picture ID. And this was arriving at the center one hour before they opened on a Tuesday.

RE: Got to love DMV

I went to DMV in virginia, my license renewal was due. we had just renewed passports so had documents handy, and used the new passport of course, plus an electric bill. I don't think appointments are offered. I just went in on a weekday to usual DMV with the documents. it was a busy day, waited about an hour, but I had brought a book expecting that. process took about 10 minutes, and I got new REAL ID license mailed to me in a week.
At our DMV, you go in and register at info desk, get assigned a letter and number, and people get called to different workers depending on your reason for the visit. its efficient.

Re passports, our local public library has registered to be a place to take passport applications, they have several staff who went to trainings on this. We had old passports but had let them expire. So we made appointments back in the very early spring, brought all our documents, and that took about 20 or 30 min for each of us. Got the new passports in the mail about 2 weeks later. Librarian told us the library was still in its probationary stage of doing the passport applications, so everything they sent in was double checked as soon as it was received, and things were sent out sooner to applicants.

RE: Got to love DMV

I just renewed my license yesterday at MVA in Maryland. Real ID, no appointment, in and out the door in less than 20 min. Amazing, the folks working were pleasant and very efficient. I commented that this was the best experience I had ever had in 40 years of dealing with the MVA. To be fair I did have all of the correct, required documents ready. Carefully read what is required.

RE: Got to love DMV

Sadly we all must do this pretty soon if you expect to get on an airplane. I am going sometime this fall/winter when they won't be as crowded. I think I heard you call and make an appointment.

I thought it said that you could still use a valid passport to get on a plane.

And military issued ID (along with your DL). That's why I won't be getting Real ID until my current license expires.

Some states really dragged their feet to the very end on this. 14+ years is a lot of leeway for compliance.

Unfortunate thing in VA is that 9 6-9 months ago they weren't even telling people they had the option to get real ID for $10 more, so a lot of people who would have gotten them then are scrambling for them now.

RE: Got to love DMV

They should have accepted the lease. That, alone, even without utilities is on the list of approved documents. I would have gone postal and showed them the website! Click to follow link...

EDIT: Well, I see they list two docs from that table. If you only had one then that was quite risky trying to pass it off as two since it included utilities.

I had my approved docs, made an appointment, and the process was MOSTLY smooth. When I made my appointment I was there with my wife after our wedding to get her new ID and made the appointment in person. They were scheduling a couple months out. I show up for my appointment and... no record of it, go figure. I assured the guy I had an appointment and with nothing other than my Google calendar as "proof" I explained that I made it in person and I pointed to the woman I made it with. He said, no problem, and checked me in under an appointment. The scary part was this was end of August and there were a million kids and parents in there getting their licenses before start of school year. It was an open room and I probably sounded like a liar and a sleazebag. Everyone was staring at me while speaking with the receptionist. As I overheard many grumbling over sitting there for 2+ hours I waited at most 5 mins and skipped to the front. I thought I was going to be killed.

RE: Got to love DMV

Mstaszew, glad you prevailed!

Our experience wasn't that bad in hindsight. Definitely pays to have all your paperwork in order.

I wondered about this, as well, as I checked the website a few days ago, and saw a lease agreement was acceptable. I changed my billing address on my electric bill to my Buxton PO Box a few days ago (my physical address is already on the bill, of course), so I'm hoping I won't have any problem. I have my lease agreement, electric bill, birth certificate and Social Security card.

RE: Got to love DMV

I would prefer pulling my own teeth out of my head with a pair of vice grips over going to the DMV in VA.
It was a complete pain to get that " little black star" endorsement on the licence.

RE: Got to love DMV

Glad I read this post as I was totally unaware of the Real ID. NJ hasn't even starting issuing them....they say they will during summer of 2019. Only had since 2005....no need to hurry.

RE: Got to love DMV

DS16 took his drivers' test last week, and when we walked around from the exam office to the DMV office, I was shocked. There was ONE person being waited on and no one else there at all. This was at 1:15 on a Wednesday. He walked right up to the counter and was finished in about 10 minutes. I've never seen the place that empty! I always try to be there at 8:00 a.m. on a Saturday because there aren't many people there at that time.

I started getting nasty form emails from MD’s DMV equivalent a while back. The deadline here was July 3, if you didn’t get the Real ID data updated with the state you risked getting your license confiscated by a cop if you got stopped or otherwise had to show a cop your license.

This is incorrect and bad information.
Of course it is MD...so who knows?

RE: Got to love DMV

That’s nuts! What are they going to do to out of state licensees? I don’t plan to get a REAL ID. I have a passport book & card I’ll use if I need it.

Wait, this is different? there are over 66,000 MD folks who received REAL ID licenses (fraudulently?) without providing the required documentation??!! Or am I reading this incorrectly?
I guess if you like your ID you can keep your ID, except you can't?

Absolutely true. I renewed my license less than 2 years ago. The new license had the star to show it was real ID compliant, except it really wasn’t compliant. I didn’t want to risk the police confiscating my license so I went back and presented the documents the MD DMV should have asked for the first time.

Two years ago I renewed my MD license and I also got a license with the star, showing it was Real ID compliant, but MD had not been checking documents so my license wasn’t really compliant.

John, the next time you renew your license it will be the real id.
