Water temps... What happened?!

Water temps... What happened?!

First half of the week swimming was perfect. Today the temp is 58! Was it from the storm? Any chance it will go back up tomorrow? If not we may have to drive South (in southern shores) to get one more day of swimming!

RE: Water temps... What happened?!

Wind direction plays a key role. If it blows in off the ocean, it pushes warm surface water in toward shore. If it blows out, it pushes warm surface water away from shore. My guess is, the wind direction changed.

I left on Tuesday from Ocracoke - the water was perfect

Yes, the last couple of days, we have had a pretty stiff wind from the South West which blows the warmer surface water out to sea!
Interestingly, When you are South of the Point/Lighthouse in Buxton, because of the curvature of land, the same South West wind brings warmer water into shore! Thus warmer water on Hatteras and Ocracoke beaches!

RE: Water temps... What happened?!

Water Temps and bugs. Both have everything to do with wind direction.

RE: Water temps... What happened?!

The wind doesn't affect the water temperature as much south of Rodanthe because it's closer to the warm Gulf Stream. North of Rodanthe is more affected by the colder Labrador Current.

Yeah I checked the surf reports and rodanthe down was 80 degrees while we were at 58 today! Was going to drive down for the afternoon but was worried we would get there and have storms. If tomorrow is cold water and no rain we may have to give it a try. See they have Beach access at Bodie island but didn't know if that was South enough for warmth. Thanks!

NPS has beach accesses from Salvo south to the Hatteras Ferry Landing (ocean and soundside), some with bath houses, If you have 4 wheel drive and a permit you can drive out to the ocean or soundside, if not you can park and walk over the dune to the ocean! The further south the warmer the water! Have Fun!

RE: Water temps... What happened?!

Not trying to be Dr. Doom and Gloom, but that Rodanthe temps sounds too high. Rodanthe is not like "around the corner" at Buxton where the beach turns toward the SW. You need a accurate device to take temps. I would love to know the source. You have to understand that some self serving business will pump up temps because their business will benefit. To my knowledge there is no Government Agency reporting in that area. Remember surface temps are not what your thighs and feet feel. BTW, Rodanthe is maybe only few miles closer to the Stream than say KH. Down at Hatteras yes much closer.

RE: Water temps... What happened?!

We were in Southern Shores and the water was cold there too. But we did enjoy seeing the dolphins splashing around not far from shore. Wasn't too keen about going in the water anyway after Wednesdays sharks.

RE: Water temps... What happened?!

Sharks? What sharks?

RE: Water temps... What happened?!

Hi Crunch...
The ones that swim in the ocean.
Four different people saw them at the same time.
One guy had been fishing about waist deep when he encountered them. Parents got their kids out of the water, but one man took his young son out and said "hey it's the way it is here!"
Two different people told me they were minimally five feet in length and four of them. Even the seasoned fisherman seemed a little rattled. I personally saw one, but it was only a baby. I kept a look out though because I figured if there's a baby around, there's bound to be others.

RE: Water temps... What happened?!

Wow! That will keep me out of the water. Where was this? Southern Shores area?

In the 4 previous years we've been there, no reports of sharks. Lots of dolphins but no sharks. A bit spooky if a seasoned fisherman gets rattled.

Will probably have to keep this to myself for now. Don't want my kids to freak out.

Read about some sharks a month or so ago, but that was quite a bit further south (Atlantic Beach ?). I wonder if they're migrating north.

RE: Water temps... What happened?!

Not sure why they appeared but we stayed out after their sightings. And with at least 4 people seeing them in the same area around the same time it was definite. I didn't get spooked until men started whistling to get the kids to come in who were out swimming with their boards. They seemed urgent. They were whittling and yelling for all the kids, not just their own. This was about a feet feet north of the Kitty Hawk pier. People fish off that pier. I would think the sharks gravitate towards the bait, but not sure.

RE: Water temps... What happened?!

*whistling, I meant. Loud whistles.

RE: Water temps... What happened?!

Rodanthe is actually the most western land in NC. That's where the "real" turn happens. The water temp from Rodanthe on south rarely drops below 75 in July and August and is usually in the 78-82 range. You're welcome to go down and scientifically measure it, I'll go by my on site experiences. Big grin

The water south of the point is even warmer, usually.

Yep, any pier is a) a structure, food chain love structures b) folks fishing w live bait or discarding (the ought not) cleaned fish remains also get the food chain excited.

I am continually blown away by the number of folks that seemed puzzled by that - more to the point allow their kids to swim/play in the water near a pier.

Also, it appears that the rays are tiling and are everywhere, hard not to step on one - often times their wing tips break the surface and are mistaken for shark, especially if at an angle and the second tip looks a bit like a sharks tell (their caudal fin). I got bumped by one (at least that's what I hope it was Theeth smiley yesterday).

RE: Water temps... What happened?!

I am just really surprised that Sharks would want to be seen with us. How dare them!!!!

RE: Water temps... What happened?!

Rodanthe = "Real Turn" My map shows Buxton. Oh well, anyway I'm glad its warmer enjoy.

RE: Water temps... What happened?!

Just for reference with the numbers above, the S turns are just north of Rodanthe. The numbers look right with my completely scientific "toe in the water" measurements. Laughing smiley

RE: Water temps... What happened?!

And btw, my reading for Florida is currently 77 but winds are clocking around from SW to SSE as we speak. So I’ll check the temps later on in the PM and try to remember to update.

Hoping to visit Castillo de San Marcos again this evening if it’s not too crowded. Weekends can be packed and the Park Service has limited parking at the fort. Last time I went the moat was full from Irma and the skeeters chased me all the way to my offsite spot... Pray
