Contractors

Contractors

Hello,
We recently purchased a home in Duck and I've been finding all sorts of useful and interesting information on this forum so thank you all!

Wanted to ask folks if they have recommendations for general contractors? We had tried getting estimates from 2 so far: one took a while to get back to us and provided an estimate that was uninterpretable and not helpful; we haven't heard anything back from the other contractor, and it's been almost a month since we met with him! Are these time lines typical for contractors in this area? Can anyone recommend someone reliable and professional who does good work? We are looking to install flooring, paint, renovate the kitchen and bathrooms. We are not planning on making structural changes so a good "handyman" or home improvement company might do also.

Mahalo!

We use Walter Gallop. PM sent with his contact info vs. sharing his cell number here on a public forum. Check your messages.

RE: Contractors

Try out J A Hart, General Contractor.
Very professional, gives a guarantee, is there in person to make sure his guys do a good job.

RE: Contractors

Hatteras Bound and Targa Dave on the Connection both perform beautiful work. They tend to be very busy, however, send them a private message.

RE: Contractors

Several of us on here have used Brindley Beach Construction and been very pleased. Call Jesse. Great guy and team working with him.

RE: Contractors

Sounds like you got the cold shoulder from the contractor if they did not get back to you. Some jobs are too small and sometimes they are too busy, so here they never say NO. They just don't show up or call back. It also sort of depends what you want done. Maybe you need a handyman more than a contractor. But the summer and Spring are the times getting someone is hard. When things slow down they become more available.

They are no longer in business. Targa Dave took a full time job with the School system.

RE: Contractors

Thanks everyone for the helpful info and the recommendations!
I was wondering if people were on "island time" or just too busy. The project is fairly large so I don't think it would have qualified as too small to bother with. We will call some of the recommended contractors and hopefully get some work done soon!

RE: Contractors

You can also try the Outer Banks Home Builders Association.

Jim, you’ve got names a bit confused. Hatteras Bound (Dave Hala) is the one who took a job with the school system. His brother Dan is still very active as far as I know. Most decent small contractors have more work than they can handle at the moment, so lead/response times are slow. If it can be an off season job without tight timing or people in the house, then you’ll have better luck.

I’m actually trying to cut back on my work load, so just not bidding as much any more, but you can check out www.shoal-draft.net for some of my jobs. Basic kitchen I just finished up a few months ago for a small annual rental house I built

RE: Contractors

Targadave, just yesterday I was looking through the OBC pictures and came across the thread about your addition to your home..which then led me to that beautiful boat you built. I remembered that, but was awestruck all over again. You are so talented!

Yeah, from Corp tech, to startup tech, to kiteboard instructing, to boat building, to building stuff for customers. Hit 60 last year so tapering off a bit on the contracting thing. Spending more time taking care of a parent, and lots more “knee friendly” time kite foiling with other ole timer homies this year. A typical sand bar life......Tounge smiley

Yes, that would be me! I’ve actually been working for the school system for 10 years so it’s nothing new. Been doing that and running my own business at the same time. I’m at the point where I don’t need to do heavy construction anymore BUT I am still doing property maintenance, especially for my many long-time customers.
