Headed south from Ohio... current route advice?

6 days, yes!!!! The last few trips we have taken I-77 south to I-74 to Winston Salem and headed east from there. In the past we've stayed the night in Rocky Mount so as to be fresh on our first day - it's been a great plan!

We have avoided the "northern route" for several years to avoid traffic coming in from the north.

I am especially curious as to your thoughts and how that route has been recently for those who took it....
This year we are staying the night before near Manteo and can't wait smiley

Thanks in advance for your responses... We are traveling on Saturday, by the way, for a Sunday - Sunday rental in Hatteras

That's the route we take.... I-77, I-74, I-40 then US 64. We typically leave Friday morning around 9:00 and drive to the Raleigh area and stay over night. Finding a place with an indoor pool for the kids to enjoy is a perk. Wake up, get breakfast and trek on for the remainder 3-4 hour drive. Coming home, we just suck it up and drive straight through.

I’ve gone all ways between here & Cleveland. Via Winston-Salem is the best. Take I540 north around Raleigh.

We have taken the same route for 10 years coming from Michigan I-77, I-74, I-40, US 64. We leave on Friday and stay in Mount Airy. Safe travels.

We just went down from Ohio on Friday, 5/31. 77 was fine until the Princeton area. Construction backup added some time. After that, the usual slowdown in the Winston-Salem area to merge onto I-40 Business. We took some side streets to save a little time. 40 was slow in the Raleigh area.

Coming home we left KDH on Saturday the 8th around 6:55am. Went north. No issues around Norfolk. Construction traffic on I-64 just shy of I-295 outside of Richmond added about 10 minutes. No delays other than that.

Hope this helps.

Last couple trips I’ve skipped I40 biz at W-S for regular I40. I’ll always go that way now. It is not very far south, traffic is lighter, and it seems a little faster than I40 biz.
