Just a Weekend

Just a Weekend

We are shooting down to Buxton for the Fathers day weekend. We will travel from PA on Friday night, and make our way home on Monday. That gives us 2 full days in our favorite place on earth. As we sit here chatting about how we will spend those 2 days....where to eat....where to beach, fish, shop etc....it got me to thinking: if you only had 2.....how would you spend your 2 days in OBX? (I'm not looking for advise here. I'd just like to read what others would do)

RE: Just a Weekend

Honestly if I only had two days, I wouldnt be doing anything but enjoying the beach and pool, assuming I had access to a pool. If I arrived on Friday or Sat. afternoon/evening, we'd eat dinner at John's in KH. Not fancy, but it is a must every visit. If I did any shopping it would only be late in the evening after sunset....maybe a quick run through of the shops in Duck and grab a pizza at Wave..great place to catch the sunset. Before heading home I would enjoy breakfast on the Nags Head Pier and absorb that last bit of salt air and view of the beach. And the last thing we do every yr. is grab a dozen Duck Donuts on our way out of town, and munch on them all the home. Or at least into W. Virginia. They never last all 770 miles. In love

Enjoy your weekend!

RE: Just a Weekend

Our last trip was two and a half days. We squeezed in a lot over Thanksgivin! Local oysters, friends, the point, craft fair at the school gym, and a quick trip up the beach to visit old KDH friends and grab lunch at Kill Devil Grill.

I never have liked turkey all that much...

Craft fair at Hatteras school?

RE: Just a Weekend

I do it about every 6 weeks. Live just outside Philly. With me being a diehard fishermen, I leave thur night and gather bait when I arrive in the canals and the sound, Then I spend as much time on the beach as possible. I may or may not get a room. Eat breakfast and dinner at the local establishments and leave late in the day on Sunday. I am so use to the drive that it doesn't even phase me anymore. Enjoy your weekend smiley with shades Beer

We were down for Thanksgiving a few years ago and went to that arts fair. Loved it. A painting of the Ocracoke lighthouse I bought there is the first thing I see every morning.

I actually enjoy the ride. Even the ride home, although not as much as the ride down

RE: Just a Weekend

Not sure of the timeline, but there would be a sunrise and sunset from Jockey's Ridge, a meal at Tortuga's Lie, a walk along the beach in South Nags Head, some fishing from Basnight Bridge (if allowed) or the surf, a home cooked meal of fresh seafood (possibly what was caught) and maybe a little shopping at Kitty Hawk Kites and climbing the tower there. If there's any time left, then it doesn't matter what I do because I'll be in OBX and not LA (where I moved to over 10 years ago).

RE: Just a Weekend

NOTHING,

RE: Just a Weekend

I've been to Hatteras for only 48 hours or less on many multiple occasions. In each and every case, I spend nearly the entirety of my time working on the house. Like you said, definitely not a suggestion smiley

RE: Just a Weekend

I'd say don't make a plan. See what the weather is like but plan to be on the beach as much as possible. You can see the ocean from Pa! I would eat out on night and eat in with local sea food the other. Happy Father's Day!

RE: Just a Weekend

Beer and beach! Thumbs up

RE: Just a Weekend

We have done this A LOT.

A little house maintenance, then fish, surf, kayak. Stay as far away from people as possible. Definitely no shopping, (that can be done at home or when we are on Hatteras for a week or more).

RE: Just a Weekend

If we only had two days.....

The drive down would be spent wishing we had more. We would have to get in one sunrise, duck donuts (even though I prefer yeast donuts - its just tradition), lots of beach time, a shore dive on the triangle wrecks (the Carl Gerhardt and the Kzyickes), more beach time, dinner out somewhere (we have lots of favorites), a round of mini-golf, ice cream from Booty Treats and a mad Viking burger from Spanky's on the way home.

However, I'm sure plans would repeatedly change.

RE: Just a Weekend

We try not to plan anything. Just go with it. We use to plan it down to the minute and it wasn’t as relaxing due to feeling rushed. Be safe

RE: Just a Weekend

We certainly won't run all the way down there with a schedule in mind....but a few things on our list: drinks at Pops and Smacnallys. Dinner at Hatteras Sol. Fishing wherever we think the fish might be, and if possible we'd like to take a peek at a rental home for next May.

If I only had two days (and I’ve done this many times) I’d stay in Kitty Hawk (mile post #1 Hilton Garden Inn) so the drive from home is easier.

Full Day 1 - coffee on oceanfront deck at sunrise, walk on the pier before breakfast at Art’s Place, relax in a comfy beach chair for the day, and swim in the pool before an early dinner at Steamers in Southern Shore (hopefully at an upstairs table with ocean view.) Sunset colors from the KH pier, followed by watching the moon rise in a rocking chair by the courtyard fire pit. Sleep like a baby.

Full Day 2 – coffee in a rocker at sunrise on dune top deck, blueberry pancakes at Nags Head Pier House. Beach, pier and pool then dinner either at Coastal Provisions SS or sunset dinner at Costal Cantina on the Duck boardwalk. Hotel fire pit rocking chair with a view and my little travel flask to sweeten my hot chocolate. Sweet dreams.

Fun thread! Have a great trip. Congrats on your upcoming HI wedding.

Early morning walks, several hours on the beach, some chill time by the pool if available, dinner at Pops, some night time shops and then evening under the stars on the beach or deck.

Have fun - I love those short trips - they have a different feeling than an entire week. Have fun!

RE: Just a Weekend

Interesting question. Two days - hmmmm....

For me the rental would HAVE to ocean front. Can't go that far and not see ocean whenever I want. Most of the time would spent on the beach. Usually we eat in, but two days calls for some restaurants. Probably Nags Head Pier for breakfast one day. Red Drum for dinner one night, maybe Sugar Shack the other night and sit sound side for the sunset. Lunch at Sam and Omie's. One breakfast and lunch at the rental. Drinks on the deck. Walks on the beach. Mostly just relaxing.

Now I'm in vacation daydream mode...how am I supposed to get any work done?

RE: Just a Weekend

I have made many of these type trips over the years and they are great! I always had one or two planned activities to do first. After that I just let it flow as there are so many variables and "pop up" activities with weather being a factor! As stated, it is a short trip down and a long drive home!
Have Fun and Enjoy!

RE: Just a Weekend

The weekend forecast looks amazing. Getting excited.
