Buxton Trip - May 30 - June 10, 2019

I flew into Norfolk Thursday morning before noon, and fortunately little traffic. I drove straight to Buxton without stopping. Of course, I drove straight to the lighthouse, then Old Lighthouse Beach.

Last month, I bought a camper that’s already hooked up at Buxton Oaks Campground, so after the beach, I went to Right On 12 to pick up my title from Steve (He arranged the sale and picked up the title for me), then went to my camper for the first time. I finally have a Buxton address!

After settling in, I went to Pop’s to have a drink with my friend, Ollie, then, Kevin and Kim invited me over for dinner and drinks. So good seeing their faces again. Friday, I spent way too much time buying cleaning supplies and cleaning the camper, but managed to squeeze in some beach time, as well.

Friday night, it stormed like crazy. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that much lightning. I called a cab and went to Pop’s to hear Jack Quidley play and sing. Such a fun night. I stepped outside to watch the storm for a while, too.

Oh, and I bought a new guitar to keep down here, and it was delivered to my camper Friday. I’d always wanted a blue one and the color of this one is called “Ocean Blue Burst.”

Yesterday, I made myself enjoy some beach time and relax like I’m on vacation instead of working on the camper. I went to South Beach yesterday morning. Didn’t shoot pics, but shot some video. Really beautiful day and still lots of shell beds.

Yesterday afternoon, I went back to Lighthouse Beach, walked pretty far down, sat on beach towel for a while, then it started raining, so I headed back up to the jetty where the sky was clear. Wind from the north got me sandblasted, but I didn’t even care. Check out that sky!

Loved the colors.

Before I bought the camper, I had already booked a rental house, so I kept the reservation and checked into the house yesterday. Met Kim, Kevin and other friends at a friend’s beach house for dinner and drinks late afternoon yesterday. Kevin made his wonderful ceviche with the Spanish Mackerel caught yesterday, fresh Poke, and Shrimp Pesto Pasta. Everything was delicious, as always. We sat on the deck, watching the ocean with way too many drinks all night. I walked back to my rental house sometime after 11. Taking it easy right now, but will hit the beach soon. More pics to follow! It sure is good to be back here. I just can’t get over how good the air smells!

Thank you much, everyone, for all of your kind words and encouragement! It really made me feel good reading all of your posts.

Today was the best day yet of this trip; absolutely perfect in every way! Kevin drove by my rental house and honked this morning. When I went outside, he told me to come swimming with him and Kim in an hour. I was feeling really rough from last night’s Tequila, but I walked down and met them on the beach at the end of North Tower Circle. We swam for so long. The temperature outside and in the water was just perfect! We just kept riding the waves and the water was so clear and such a pretty shade of turquoise. When we finally left, Kevin told me to come over to their house for dinner around 4. He made some Mexican chicken tortilla creation, fresh guacamole, more fresh poke from the mullet he caught this morning, and margaritas. Everything was soooo delicious! All spices, herbs, garlic and veggies from their garden.

He then drove us to the Point (as far as we could go), he fished a little but didn’t catch anything, and we all just sat and enjoyed the beautiful weather and views. We then climbed to the top of the highest dune and stayed for quite a while, just taking it all in. Not many people out there and just a beautiful day!

Then, around 7:30, as we were standing there, my back was to the lighthouse and Kevin said, “Oh my God. Jessica, turn around and look at the lighthouse.” I instantly got chills, turned around, and it had turned on. Still bright and sunny out, there it was, spinning and sweeping that light across the sky. I asked, “Why is it on this early?” He said, “Because you’re here!” We all couldn’t stop smiling and just laughing about it. I asked him if he’d ever seen it come on this early before while still light outside and he said, “Not since that time you were here when it stayed on all day and night.” That was during my October trip last year. Here you go.

I shot this of them a few minutes after we saw the lighthouse on, so you can see how bright it still was outside.

RE: Buxton Trip - May 30 - June 10, 2019

On the drive back to their house, we found a turtle on the side of the road, took it back to their house, and put it in the pond in their back yard with the rest of the turtles. That turtle has no idea how much better his/her life just got, as Kev and Kim feed them everyday.

After I left their house, I drove straight to the lighthouse and just sat there watching it for quite a while. Back at the rental house now, where I’m finally having an early evening and more sleep so I can get up and start the day tomorrow, feeling great. This is the first day since I arrived that it really felt like a vacation. No cleaning or decorating the camper, no errands. I was able to just completely relax and enjoy this beautiful island and good friends.

Went to the jetty for the sunrise this morning. A little cloudy, so I didn’t get to see it rise out of the ocean, but it broke through the clouds shortly after. Another beautiful morning on Cape Hatteras!

RE: Buxton Trip - May 30 - June 10, 2019

I was feeling hopeful as the lighthouse stayed on this morning, but it did finally turn off right around 7, more than an hour after sunrise. This was at 6:23 this morning.

RE: Buxton Trip - May 30 - June 10, 2019

So glad you went swimming - I did, too, but up in S. Nags Head - couldn't believe we were swimming on June 2nd!

Love the lighthouse story...and really looking forward to seeing you and your Ocean Blue Burst in real life soon, Jessica! Fish

Thanks! I told my friend Kim yesterday that it still hasn’t quite sunk in. She reminded me that I have a physical address, a PO Box, an electric bill, and will be paying property tax, so it’s real. Crazy!
