Visiting Ocracoke

RE: Visiting Ocracoke

Is there any day hat is better to visit Ocracoke ferry traffic wise? We are going in 3 weeks and plan to be on the ferry by 9:00. Is that early enough?

Sunday and Monday are the best days to go. You might have a short wait at 9am, but on Sun/Mon it shouldn't be bad. The earlier you get there the better.

The passenger ferry will be up and running tomorrow. Lets see how that goes.

It's not too big so rent a golf cart for the day and you will see it all. Go see this white thing!

I suspect Tim is trying to be light in his comment but I've been visiting Ocracoke all my life and have NOT "seen it all." It would take me living there for at least a season or a year to really get into all the nooks and crannies. When I lived at KDH for a decade we'd vacation there, so it certainly isn't for lack of trying.

One of my favorite activities is biking at night on Ocracoke. You haven't lived until you've experienced THAT magic!! Or climbing a live oak and getting stuck. Or biking from the Hatteras side ferry dock into the village and having the wind come around on the return so that you have to hitch a ride in the back of a pickup with your bikes. Biking at night is definitely cool, but, PLEASE rock at least a tail light. It gets really dark here, which is a big part of the appeal, and bikes are really hard to see. Law says that bike lights are required and Jason will stop and talk with you if you don’t have a light. Still, there are plenty of folks that don’t.
