We may visit relatives in VA this weekend. It is only a 2-hour trek to OBX. Ignoring weather for the weekend, is it likely to come to KDH and chill for a couple of days?

It's perfectly alright! Most places in Kill Devil Hills are open, and the weather is still great! Damage in KDH was mostly limited to the oceanfront area around Third st. (except for some trees down in other areas). It's a great place to chill out for a couple of days!

Thanks for the insight. Also, the pics of isabel. I had just finished a vacation in Duck the end of August and had gone to Ocracoke while we were down. I had a good idea of what everything looked like from Duck to Ocracoke just a few weeks before Isabel did her thing. It was just amazing.

Do you happen to know how Awful Arthur's fared? That has always been part of our trips to OBX. We hike the dunes at Jockey's Ridge, then an early dinner at Arthur's!

Thanks so much!!!! We are coming down this weekend. Is it best to avoid the area? I certainly will forgo Arthur's so as not to be in the way of the residents.

No don't avoid the area. As a matter of fact I was just scrutinizing my aerials of the area around Avalon Pier/Awful's and what I did notice was that there was almost no damage to any oceanfront structure north of the pier for quite a ways. The roads in that area are all fine, no reason to avoid it at all.

How about the area south of Avalon Pier? The place we stay is the Gulf Stream Condos on the beach directly across from the Wright Memorial. I worry about some of the old style cottages that were nearby.

I don't have any specific knowledge about the Gulf Stream Condos but the whole area from Avalon pier down to around 2nd street lost a lot of beach.

I hate to hear that, but appreciate the info. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your pictures.
