Are there stingray problems in the Outer Bakcs in the Sring? I live in Sarasota, Florida on the gulf coast and every year we have to do the "stingray shuffle" to scare them out of the way. Thousands of them lay in the sand close to shore during mating season every Spring. I got stung by one two years ago, and it was very painful. Does the same thing happen up there?

Never seen it around here. The water in the spring is probably too cold here that time year. They probably move south to do their mating.

People are stung but not very often They are a pain to bring in on a rod and reel. but when nothing else is biting its something to do. Just watch you step, I saw 2 when I was looking for bait in Ocracoke also a horse-shoe crab

Here's a really stupid question: Can you eat them or make any kind of soup from them? Went on a stingray tour in the Cayman Islands but they never said anything about that.

I imagine you could probably eat the wings. I've eaten Clearnose Skate wings before, tastes just like Scallops. Not sure about Rays though.

I've grilled cownosed rays before....kind of a pain in the posterior to prepare but it was actually pretty tasty.
