Cool photos. What's the story with the horses? I don't remember seeing horses on the beach before.

Great pictures! That red horse looks just like the one that chased my husband across from Food Lion in 1994, that was hilarious! We still tease him about that!

I think I remember hearing about a horse that actually ran into the Food Lion, I think it was after 1993. Anyone else hear about this?

Mike....the horses were always wandering through Corolla/Whalehead up to around 1996/1997? when so many had been killed by cars on Rt 12 that they tried to move them up to Carova. They put fencing up just north of the end of paved Rt. 12 to keep the horses up there. Since that time we don't see them much, but in '99 or maybe '00 we saw five of them right in front of our cottage just hanging out on the beach. Got some great photos of them.

ok...so who remembers the buffalo (bison) that used to be up thataway? And, no, I'm not kidding...

Only heard about them roundhouse....did you see them in person? Must have been really a wonderful place before they paved north of Duck -horses, bison, fox, etc. Whereabouts where the bison?

They were somewhere north of where the road ends in Corolla. Up past Wash Woods I believe. Some Fellow bought 2 or 3 of 'em with idea crossing them with beef cattle and raising beefalo. (Can't remember the guys name.) I only saw 'em once as a young boy. Went up north with my aunt for some fishing with a friend of hers that lives up that way and wound up spending the night (aunt had a few too many Golden Beverages!). The house of my aunt's friend didn't have an inside bathroom and I vividly remember waking up to answer the call of Nature that night and had to use the "Banging Pan" that was hung up underneath the porch. For some reason the buffalo like to hang around her house and she always kept a cast iron pan and large spoon hanging on one of the stilts of the house for the expressed purpose of chasing off inquisitive shaggy beasties.

Oh.....and the beefalo thing never did "pan out" (please excuse the pun). It's not like that area up there (or anywhere on the Banks) is what I would call suitable pastureland.

BTW, that fellow's name was Ernie Bowden. He has been a lifelong resident of Carova. Nice guy - real "salt of the earth" sorta fellow. His run-ins with the government when he was ranching up here was the straight out of ol' west novels. He finally gave up ranching about 7 to 10 years ago and sold all of the cattle (though he still has the ranch).
He was so tired of having to deal with the County government that he ran for the Board of Supervisors several years ago and won. He is still in the Board today.

...thanks for the memory jogger. I was having a dickens of a time trying to remember that guy's name. Speaking of names....remember Walter Perry? Lived in Sound Sea Village and had that small marina there? As a youngster I'd fish in the sound at his marina for sunfish and bass. He always had some cane fishing poles either in his boathouse or in the shed that he let us kids use.

You have a better memory that I do! No, I don't remember Walter, but then again I don't remember what I had for dinner last night! The northern beaches (beyond Duck) have changed so dramatically in the last 15-20 years that it is sometimes hard to think about how it was. The best/worst part has been that the OBX has been one of the last major areas on the East Coast to finally develop. Some folks thought/hoped that it might never happen.
