Does anyone out there that rents a beach house tip the housekeeper at the end of the week? How much? I leave something and was just wondering if everyone does this.

Darn it Kathy. I never thought about tipping the housekeeper until now. How much do you tip? I don't have to start tipping my rental agent do I? Make sure you don't raise the bar too high for the rest of us cheap people.

I have been putting in $20, there are 2 people as cleaners on the envelope. I just wonder if anyone else does tip. Don't feel bad you never did it, do it next time maybe.

Does leaving beer count as tipping?

You have beer left ??? ;)

I always like to leave a little something for the people coming after me. I look at it as building good will among fellow OBX goers. One day everyone will do it, and there will be ice-cold beer in your fridge when you show up at the beach. Its Bubba's beer outreach program. Pass it on.

If there's beer in my fridge when I get there, I'll leave some for the next folks !

Course the cleaning crew could have taken it with them ?

Good idea though Bubba.

I always leave $10 - $20 for the cleaning crew. Cleaning a house from top to bottom is hard work, and they usually don't get paid well for their time. It's something I always do.

No, because when we rent a house we leave it exactly like we found it. First we go over the house and make a list of anything that may be broken or maybe something that was mentioned in the brochure and not there. I would also recommend that you take a camcorder and videotape the house and in each room. I have a friend who had a bad experience with one of the realty companies I don't remember which one it was but suggested that anyone I know I tell them to make a tape or take pictures in the house. Anyway, the morning we leave we vacuum, sweep, empty dishwasher, clean the kitchen wipe out the fridge, make the beds and take out the trash......No tip is left for the housekeeper by us. I don't ever remember seeing any envelop in the houses we have ever rented. Maybe this is new? We still wouldn't leave a tip as they don't have anything but the bathooms to clean when we leave. We have always done this to ensure that we get our deposit back without any deductions. And one time I remember we rented a house in Monterey Shores the housekeepers didn't even arrive until after 4 PM and they were in and out in 15 minutes.

When we leave we do the same as you, everything is ready for the next people except bathrooms of course, but I just thought it was a nice gesture to leave something. I rent through Midgett and there is always an envelope in our house.

Bubba is a genius! What a concept. Next time I stay at the OBX I will leave a six-pack of frosty cold Miller Light for the next group to stay there.

This could start a chain reaction that makes the world a better place...with beer. Way to go Bubba.

I had never thought of tipping before. But we leave the house spotless, we even clean the bathrooms! In some cases it looks better than when we checked in! I always tip housekeepers when I stay in motels/condos though. Never have been left an envelope or anything from any of the housekeepers at the rental houses.

Hey, where are you guys staying next year? What week(s)? I want to reserve the house after you so I get the free beer!

I have never tipped, guess I just assumed we are paying enough for the rental. We also leave the place in better condition than when we arrive, it seems the bathtubs are just never clean enough for me. I have actually gotten a thankyou note from the housekeeper thanking me for cleaning before leaving. We have always rented from Sun and have never seen an envelope. I suppose a small tip would be nice, I know they aren't paid much, $8-$10 an hour? But then again, no one tips me at work.

I doubt very much they are paid that much. I'm a waitress and people don't realize that I make $2.38 an hour. When I was at the OBX last week I saw 8 adults and 4 kids eating and they didn't leave the waitress a dime, not that is bull. That is a hard job and to put up with people is even harder. She was one of those foreign young kids that come over and most of them are sending their money back to families back home. People go on vacation and spend all that money but can't leave a lousy tip.
