Sanders Bay / Mossey Island

I'll have access to a nice sized pier that extends into Sanders Bay, just north of Mossey Island. Since I'm new to the area, and haven't fished in a while, I'd appreciate any suggestions regarding a decent rod and reel combination for this specific area. I know the area is marshy and the water is shallow. I asked "AI" and it was suggested a medium fast-action graphite rod, perhaps with a Penn Conflict 2500 reel. Seemed pretty specific to me, but it sounded legit. So rather than go the AI route, I figured I'd ask here and see if anybody had a set up that they'd recommend. When I researched fishing in the specific area, the article mentioned both red drum and Atlantic Croaker. Thanks in advance for any advice! If it matters, I'll be there (sound side) year-round, so hopefully the time of year doesn't dictate the gear.

Really not familiar with that Location. Soundside fishing will generally involve casting small lures (baits) as small as 1/4 oz. Even bait fishing sinkers no heavier than 1 or maybe 2 oz. 7 foot rod with reels in the 2000 to 3000 class. I would look for a good Brand either Shimano or Penn. As a reel repairman i do not recommend the Daiwa BG series.

Hi - we have a pier in the same area and regularly fish that area. When will you be there? Fishing from the pier this time of year won’t really be productive. When you get a few days of North wind it blows most of the water out of the sound and it gets really shallow and cold. In the spring thru fall we catch redfish, catfish, whit/yellow perch, bass, flounder, speckled trout and pickerel off the pier. This time of year we don’t really even cast off of it. There’s not much that requires heavy gear and we usually use small 1/4 oz jigs, weedless spoons, bass assassins, and beetle spins. Chartreuse, white or root beer colors. Shrimp and minnows are good if you want to use bait.

Thanks to both of you for your response. I anticipate moving in around April if all goes to plan. I find pier fishing extremely relaxing. Your input is very helpful. The rod and reel options locally are fresh water focused and I’ve not seen Penn products but I’ve read about them extensively. I think my first order of businesses is to purchase my license at the Corolla bait shop. I’m excited for the warmer weather as well as the access to both beach and marsh. Thanks again for your suggestions!!
